' ^.'4 THE PAUSE THAT REFRESHES (STUDIOS, THAT IS!) There's been a refinement to the plans for Penland's two- year Concentration program described in the last Penland Line. As the curriculum committee met to plan the details of the program, they came to terms with the fact that there needed to be some improvements in studio facilities before such an ambitious program could be launched. Specifically, the glass studio is not efficiently winterized and is not up to the demands of a year-round program. The clay studios need a new glaze area, the completion of the new kiln shed and some other general improvements. The metals studios are in need of a general face uplift. In addition to the studios, there needs to be some im proved housing/studio accommodations for instructors and adequate private and semi-private rooms for students. The additional time is also providing the opportunity to explore accreditation requirements with the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). These requirements cover curriculum, facility and teach ing staff and may not be as limiting as we had once assumed. Some of these goals have been met and the rest should be accomplished next winter. So with cautious optimism, Penland is looking forward to a two-year Concentration to begin as soon as the facilities are ready. This means that for the time being, the CORE Student Program will remain as it has been. The changes described in the last Penland Line will not be in effect until the two- year Concentration is initiated. gj] PENLAND iBO LINE Neighborhood News In Memoriam Jerry Wesson, a dear friend to so many of us AFFILIATED WITH PENLAND, DIED ON FEBRUARY 24 OF SPINAL MENINGITIS. HE WENT TO THE HOSPITAL ONLY ONE WEEK BEFORE HIS DEATH COMPLAINING OF HEAD ACHES; HIS DEATH CAME SUDDENLY. Jerry was the world’s most dedicated core STUDENT IN 1 986 AND 1 987. HE TOOK SPECIAL PRIDE IN THE SMELLS, LOOK AND FEEL OF THE COFFEE HOUSE. WE SPENT ENDLESS HOURS THERE LAUGHING, TALKING AND BRAINSTORMING BECAUSE JERRY MADE IT SUCH A COMFORTABLE PLACE FOR EVERYONE. JERRY HAS BEEN A PART OF THE BENEFIT AUCTION SINCE THE BEGINNING AND AFTER HE LEFT PENLAND HE RETURNED EACH SUMMER TO SERVE AS BARTENDER FOR THE PRE VIEW Party and Maitre d’ for the luncheon. For the past several years, Jerry devoted HIMSELF TO RENOVATING A FAMILY HOUSE OUTSIDE OF Hickory, nc. Some friends traveled there after HIS DEATH AND WERE TAKEN BY THE STAGGERING BEAUTY OF BOTH THE HOUSE AND GROUNDS. THEY GOT TO SEE JERRY’S LANDSCAPING; SOME OF THE 500 DAFFODILS HE PLANTED WERE IN BLOOM AT THE TIME. While at penland, jerry worked in clay. Because he was so generous with himself and his work, friends are joining together to pay HIM TRIBUTE BY MAKING A DONATION TO PENLAND IN HIS NAME. This money will be used to purchase a PIECE OF PERMANENT EQUIPMENT FOR THE CLAY STUDIO. If you ARE INTERESTED IN MAKING A DONATION, PLEASE MAKE THE CHECK OUT TO PENLAND SCHOOL AND MARK IT FOR THE Jerry Wesson Memorial, it can be sent to Rebecca Caldwell at the School. Jerry’s life and how he touched us in so many WAYS IS IMPOSSIBLE TO SUM UP. JERRY WESSON, WE MISS YOU DEEPLY. -Geraldine Plato. TTT
