PENLAND B LINE
Patrick Dougherty
Penland in the spring brings the surprise of days so clear
and crisp you do think you can see forever, intermingled
with Brigadoon mornings, when the mist hides the meadow
and the mountains jut out like heavenly exclamation
points. Once in awhile it is so warm that you break out
your shorts and think (but just think!) about a swim in the
river. In the cycle of the year, spring is the time of renewal,
of creativity, of new beginnings, a perfect time to hone
your studio skills.
It's not too late for you to be a part of this spring in Pen-
land. There is still some space available in concentration
classes in clay, metals and wood and we could waitlist you
for glass. The session dates are March 15 to May 7.
Patrick Dougherty's class is called "Every Pitcher Tells a
Story," but don't be fooled, students will be working in all
vessel shapes with the focus on surface treatments, prima
rily painting. Patrick, who has taught ceramics at Xavier
Rick Smith
M THE
MOlimiNS
University and at Northern Kentucky University, be
lieves that everyone can draw or paint. He'll also pass
along what he has learned about the business side of the
creative venture during the seven years he has been
working as a studio artist in Cincinnati.
Don't hesitate to add your name to the waiting list for the
hot glass, fusing and slumping class with Finn Lynggaard.
Experience has shown us that, especially for these eight-
week classes, folks do sometimes have to cancel. Finn
shares a studio with Tchai Munch in Ebeltoft, Denmark.
He is a founder of the Glass Museum there and has
exhibited throughout the world for over twenty years.
Master glass-blower Rudolf Weniger from Austria will be
a Visiting Artist for several weeks.
Penland Resident Rick Smith will be teaching a class in
"Whitesmithing and Blacksmithing" which will bridge the
gap between jewelry-making and blacksmithing and will
promote a broader understanding of the gray areas in
between the two methods. Both basic jewelry techniques
Michael Piershalla
and more complex processes such as the use of ferrous
metals in combination with precious metal will be in
cluded. Mokume, granulation and surface inlay will be
demonstrated, and students can experiment with the ap
plication of blacksmithing to jewelry. Rick earned his
M.F.A. at Southern Illinois University and has studied at
West Surrey College of Art and Design in England.
Michael Pierschalla has been a studio woodworker since
1983, and has taught at Penland and in university pro
grams since 1986. In this concentration class he will cover
ail the fundamentals in the wood shop with an emphasis on
design and problem-solving. You'll have the opportunity
to design and build one or more pieces depending on your
interests and skill level.
Time is short so please call Penland's registrar Caren Bros!
for more information about the 1993 Spring Concentra
tion or to register by phone! 1^
