PENLAND LOSES A FRIEND Penland lost a good friend wlien J. Gordon Hanes, Jr. died on August 31. He was one of North Carolina’s great industrialists and a devoted supporter of the arts. He and his wife, Copey, were major donors to the glass studio and several times helped Penland match NEA grants. It can safely be said that Penland would not he what it is today without the generosity of Gordon and Copey Hanes. He will he missed. CONCENTRATION SCHOLARSHIPS An increase in donations to Friends of Penland over the past few years has enabled us to offer more work/study scholarships, particularly during Concentration sessions. Forty-three percent of students in the 1995 spring and fall Concentrations received full or partial work/study assistance. Nearly fifty percent of the students in the spring 1996 Concentration arc receiving full or partial work/study assistance. In our effort to reach out and make Penland accessible to the changing craft community we are delighted to he able to expand our scholarship program with thanks to the support of Friends of Penland. If you have yet to make your contribution this year, it is not too late! Complete the form below, and mail it in with your donation which will direct ly support the school’s educational mission.
