Penland Line RI WE NEED YOUR HELP! THIRD-SESSION AUCTION Session Three this summer is devoted to public art (see page g). Because a large number of the classes are process oriented, we may have a very small number of pieces in that session’s auction. If you would like to contribute a piece to help us maintain our scholarship program, please send it or drop it off by Wednesday, July 7. Our scholarship students will be very grateful for your donation. SPECIALIHANKS Special thanks go to the twenty-two staff members and twenty volunteers who got together on Saturday, March 6 and welcomed over 3oo(!) visitors to the Penland Community Open House. We had activities and demon strations in clay, glass, iron, metals, paper, photography, textiles, and wood. People came from as far away as Atlanta for the event, which was a tremendous and gratifying group effort. Thanks also go to Troy Hines who handled every book in the library and reorganized the entire space. Hundreds of volumes were culled and all of the art and craft books are now properly sorted. GALLERY The Penland Gallery opened its doors once again on April 6. The gallery has been expanded into the old letterpress studio, which will be the new exhibition room. The old exhibition space has been turned into a new sales area. In addition to the usual (wonderful) presentation of work by past and current instructors, students, and Penland Residents, the gallery is planning five special exhibitions for 1999. Penland Friends MAY 15, 1998 - MARCH 15, 1999 Spring has come early to Penland this year. The trout lilies and toothwort already cover the forest floor and the campus gardens are flourishing under Priscilla’s special attention. 1 wish I could send a bit of the Appalachian spring to every person whose name appears below as a small thank-you for the support that you demonstrate for the school. So close your eyes, picture one of Priscilla’s daffodils in your hand and know that we truly appreciate the contributions of all of our Friends. —Erika Sanger, Director of Development.
