The 1942 cotton crop yielded enough cottonseed meal to supply essential protein for 6,829,000 dairy cows producing 14 billion quarts of milk—or for -attemng 11 million beef cattle producing 2 billion pounds of beef. Cotton's 2,050,000 tons of cottonseed meal represented approximately one-third of total U. S. production of protein feed meals. In addition to protein meal, the same cottonseed yielded one million tons of hulls — roughage—the equivalent of more than 2,000,000 tons of corn or sorghum silage.
