GLOVER’S CORNER SECOND and JACKSON STREETS ROANOKE RAPIDS, NORTH CAROLINA THE COiMON DEFENSE Penalty for Defying God's Law A statement ’by the German Confessional Church, issued in May 1944 and reprinted in Oct bore by the Religious Division of the British Ministry of Informa tion, affirms that in Germany “there is a growing uncertainty as to whether the Ten Command ments are still to be considered valid.” Alarmed by this state of affairs the Church warns Christians that “we,, as Christians, must not per vert the word of God, nor call that which is good bad; we dare not al low the truth to be called foollish and wrong. We must not magnify human laws and regulations as though they were ordered by God.” This is quite evidently a slap at the Nazis whose laws, as the Confessional statement shows, have denied ever yone of the Ten Commandments. Speaking of the Nazis' violation of the Sixth Com mandment the statement says, “Woe to us and our nation when we make little of the life that God has given, and man, whom God created in His image, is only as-J sessed as to his utility; when it is considered rght to take lfe be cause human beings are consider ed as of no value, or because they belong to another race, when ha tred and cruelty are the order of the day. For God says: ‘Thou shall not kill." This is strong language. Others may want to overlook tohe events that prompted it. But Americans cannot. We cannot but agree with the words of the Archbishop oi York on October 12th when he said that "the wholesale asphyxiation or machine-gunning' of ten of thousands including children and women, the death trains, the wip ing out of whole villages like Li diee and Oradour . . . ar- crimes which we have no ngnt to tas. over.” The German Christians know the price a nation pays when it de LAD1ES AND GENTLEMEN We arc guing to have with U8 Moon a very promising young man who comes from the Land of Nowhere, but 1 who is going to take you Somewhere.
