Lumley has seen many changes while town clerk
Evelyn Lumley will be one of the
first people to tell you that the town
of Morrisviile has definitely grown
over the years.
Dressed in a white ribbed t-shirt
and a smart navy and green plaid
jumper, Lumley sits behind her
glossy cherry desk in the Morris
viile town clerk office which is
decorated in mauves, brass and
daiitwood.
As the town clerk since June of
1977, Lumley has first-hand
knowledge about just how much
Morrisviile has grown, particularly
about the Town of Morrisviile staff.
"Tve watched it grow so much,"
Lumley said.
"Hie Town of Morrisviile has ex
panded freon toie part-time employ
ee to about 53 part-time and full-
time employees."
This expansion led the Town of
Morrisviile to build the new Town
Hall that Lumley sits in now.
Lumley and the rest of the town
employees got to move from the
old Chamber of Commerce build
ing into the new Town Hall build
ing in December of 1992.
The new building, Lumley said,
was "quite a difference from our
old building."
With the change of Town Hall
sites came a change in her
responsibilities as Town Clerk.
Lumley’s primary duties as town
clerk include keeping the com
munity calendar, keeping the
mayor and commissioners in
formed of their appointments and
keeping minutes of the town board
meetings.
And for the first time, Lumley
gets to collect payables at her office
window.
Although previously confined to
working with town officials, Lum
ley said she is enjoying the op
portunity to help citizens as well.

"I like being able to soothe and
satisfy citizens about one thing or
another," she said.
And with the addition of this col
lection responsibility, Lumley stays
quite busy juggling the
townspeople and the town leaders.
"Keeping the mayor and com
missioners posted as to where they
need to be and when is definitely a
full-time job in itself," Lumley
said.
Of course, keeping up with the
mayOT may have been a little easier
in the past for Lumley since the
mayor was her husband.
Lumley’s husband was mayor of
Morrisviile for 13 years and com
missioner for four years prior to
that
Although she worked with her
husband the mayor for 13 years,
Lumley says that the recent change
has not had much of an effect on
her.
"I worked closely with my hus
band, and it would be the same if
he lost an election and I had to
work with another mayor."
The change that’s had the biggest
impact on her as town clerk was a
recent personal move.
Lumley and her husband recently
moved from Morrisviile to Mid
dlesex. so Lumley has about an
hour’s commute to and ft’om work
each day.
So hex and her husband load up in
the car every weekday morning and
battle the 1-40 morning rush hour
traffic to open the town clerk
window at 8 a.m.
Then when the town hall closes at
5 p.m., Lumley picks her husband
up from work and battles that same
t^fic to get back home to Mid
dlesex.
But Lumley can only say nice
things about the long, arduous
route.
"We’re simply enjoying it," she
said and smiled.
