"There’s more danger with new pro(hicts in the environment," adds Rigsbee, referring to blood-borne pathogens and hazardous chemi cals. But the added risks are kq)t to a minimum with more technical training, Cbiotakis says. To keep up with change, the fire department replaced the conven tional radio system with an $00 MHz trucked radio communica tions system last week. Morrisville is the third station in County to switch to the more advanced sys tem; Chiotakis says all stations will eventually modernize their equip ment Another new piece of equipment at the MorrisviUe Fire Department is the defibrillator, added July 17. Chiotakis now has two defibril- lattxs so far, costing $4,800 each. The compact machines are used to restore victims’ heartbeats during emergency situmions. One defibrillator is at the Morris- ville station and die other went to the station in Carpento' (which was added to the Morrisville department in 1975). The department plans to request funds from the town to por ch^ two more defibrillators that will permanently rest in the fire trucks. As the more experienced volunteers are learning how to op erate the new equipment, they are also teaching their profession to other volunteers. Karon Edris, who has been train ing for service at Morrisville for about 13 months, is feeling the bur den of catching up on 20 years’ wordi of technology. "Someone’s life is depending on me, so I’m spending more timp. studying than I have in a long time," she says. But spending long hours in train ing has not depressed Edris. "I am anxiously waiting for my first time out," she says. Doug Kelly, another new volunteer, also knows the firefighter’s twritory well. In 1976, he was a career firefighter in Cary and volunteered with the Apex Rescue Squad and Fire Depart ment. He now is a captain in the Chapel Hill Fire Department. "It’s not like a job where you go 8-5, Monday through Friday and do the same thing," says Kelly, who recently joined the Morrisville de partment as a volunteer. "Every thing you do as a firefighter is a little bit different every day." "There’s just something about it — maybe the excitement," Miller says of volunteering. Chiotakis looks for those emo tions in volunteers. "There’s a certain spirit in a volunteer that you don’t find in other professions," Chiotakis says. "It’s not the ’Oh I’m a hero’ con ception. It’s kind of a satisfaction that people get knowing they can make a (hfference." ACA plans second flex building Aviation Center Associates is set to begin construction of a second office and warehouse complex in Morrisville’s Commonwealth Cen ter. The 35,030-square-foot facility, to be named Aviation Center Two, will be located on Dominion Drive. Bobbitt & Associates Inc., a Raleigh-based design-build con tractor, has been awarded the con tract to construct the new building. Project developer is Mike LinAicum. "The new structure will be a flex building tike the first one, designed to be leased out to multiple tenants," Linthicum said. "Small spaces — between 5,000 and 10,000 square feet — will be leased to as many as fixir to six different tenants in this building." Linthicum served as project de- velopCT for Aviation Center One, also located in the Commonwealth Center. That 30,000-square-foot building was completed in Novem ber 1994; leasing was completed this summer. The site plan has been approved feu' the second prefect, Linthicum said. ConstructiCMi is expected to begin within 3b days. The project will take six to eight months (o WINN(i^)DIXIE America’s Supermarkef^-^'a^ Prices Good Wed., July 26th Thru Tues., Aug. 1st!
