COMING, GOING-An elevated deck Is the most population at- of the $400,000 spent was on a play area for children. About 100
traction at the airport's recently remodeled observation area. Most people a day visit the attraction.
Taking off
RDU International’s Observation Park drawing spectators
Four-year-old Bryce Hart of
Raleigh and his sistw, Tyler, age 2,
peered through the railings at the
runways waiting to see the plane
take off that would carry their
parents on a trip to San Francisco.
A few minutes before, Mackie
Vaughn of Creedmoor had watched
as the plane carrying her uncle to
Salt Lake City lifted off the run
way. Her granddaughter, Chelsea,
3, was excited ^ut going to the
play area a few yards away.
One of the Triangle’s newest
public spaces - Raleigh-Durham
International Airport’s Observation
Park - has been attracting an aver
age of 100 persons a day since
reopening June 20. It can acctan-
modate about 200 spectators.
Observation Park had been closed
since September for extensive
ranodeling. More than $400,000
wordi of improvements have been
m^ and most are geared toward
children, including a playground
complete wittr a 20- by SO-tartan
layout of RDU’s runways.
But it is the park’s observation
deck that is its most prominent fea
ture. The deck’s railing features
data and silhouettes of 30 airliners
and general aviation aircraft which
ccanmonly use Raleigh-Durham In
ternational.
The plaques highlight planes such
as the Boeing Model 717, a three
turbofan airliner that fust ent^ed
service in 1967. The craft held 189
passengers, had a weight of 97,519
pounds, a cruising speed of 592
miles per hour at 22,000 feet, had a
gas c^iacity of 8,186 gallons, and a
range of 2,645 mil^.
Contrasts are shown, especially
evident with plaque highlighting
the old Wright Flyer, a two-wing
plane that made aviation history
with its first flight on Dec. 17,
1903, at Kitty Hawk. That plane
held one passenger, cruised at 32
miles pCT hour at 10 feet off the
grounti and had a range of 120 feet
on its first flight.
And while visitors watch the
planes take off and land, an audio
system broadcasts communications
between the Federal Aviation Ad
ministration Air Traffic ConU’ol
Tower and pilots. Conversations
can be heard throughout the day.
The deck is just one of the many
numerous educational displays and
kiosks relating to flight, aviation
history, airports and the history of
RDU. Among other improvements
are a plaza area with picnic tables,
bench seating, and water fountain;
restroom facilities; a lighted wind
sock; and upgraded landscaping
and lighting.
A number of concrete pillars
stand at ground level just next to
the ramp leading to the observation
platform itself. Each holds a color
plaque describing various aspects
of aviatiai such as the story of jet
engines, the first airline, the first
powered flight and early naviga
tion.
Police now a presence at
Morrisviile town meetings
If you happened to attend recent
Boaid of COTunissioners’ meetings
in Morrisviile, you may have
noticed a police officer sitting
quietly somewhere at the rear of the
audience. The somewhat noisy
puUic reactions at public sessions
prcMnpted the police department to
assign an officer to the meetings.
Police Chief Bruce Newnam em
phasized it was not a p^manent ar
rangement, but merely a p-ecau-
tionary step in light of the general
demeanor during recent meetings.
During one session, the office on
duty had to ask a resident to leave
the room after he voiced several
obscenities at action taken by the
canmissioners.
Newnam said boisterous or
obscene manners are not permitted
ai such meetings and are violations
of the Mcarisville Town Ordinance.
Chief Newnam was seated in the
audience at the September meeting,
but said he was there only as a
backup for the officer assigned.
TTie dq)artment was short one of
ficer that night and had the officer
at Town Hall been needed else
where, Newnam said he would
have filled in for him at the session.
"We have no plans to make this a
permanent assigiunent at this time,”
be said.

The heretofore usually quiet
Town Board meetings began to
draw larger audiences when a con
troversial showcase zoning or
dinance was opposed by several
town residents, and reached a ver
bal peak when commissioners in
troduced a measure creating a new
position of administrative assistant
Despite the charges that the posi
tion was political and created to be
filled by former Mayor Ernest
Lumley, commissioners approved
the post and are actively interview
ing applicants.

for Wake County
Chief District Court Judge since J 995 • Certified Juvenile Court Judge since J 992
District Court Judge since 1979 ■ Prosecutor, Wake Coun^, 1975-1979
Prosecutor, n.C Attorney General's Office, I972-I97J
Law Cleit IlC Court of Appeals, 1971-1972
Chief Judge Sherrill has
implemented innovations to
create an efficient district court for
the citizens of Wake County by:
• stopping courtroom bottlenecks by allowing
citizens to come in at their convenience for
minor traffic cases between the hours of
7;45am and 3;50pm. At the same time, our
poiice officers are on patroi instead of on "hoid"
at the courthouse.
• Requiring that ait parents in chiid custody
cases sit down and taik together about what
is best for their children. With the help of a
mediator, over 50% of these decisions are
now made by parents - not by a judge.
• Saving time and money for citizens and
the court by allowing settlement of civil
complaints up to $15,000 through arbitration.
