8 - Morrisville and Preston Progress. Thursday. June 26.1997 Celebrate Independence with menu of ethnic flavors Recently I bought a packaged food that was a popular snack for kids when I was a youngster. I reached into the box while eagerly anticipating the pleasant memories that would come with the first deli cious bite. When it didn’t happen, I thought, “Maybe it was just that bite, and took another one.” Finally, I said out loud to no one in particular, “It sure didn't take much to please us when we were kids!” and tossed the box (my kids didn’t like it either). While I know this is dangerous, it got me to thinking. It really does take more to please today’s kid’s palates; but the trade off is that today’s kids prefer healthier foods than the previous generation of kids. (Though my kids did say that if there was ever a Kids Day, they would want to eat cake for break fast!) Kids today enjoy a broad vari ety of ethnic foods along with yogurt, salads, and even seafood that still has eyes and legs attached! Prestonwood Gourmet By Roxanne Powers So, here’s the truth; Today’s kids are connoisseurs of food and drink. They are, in short, gourmets! You can be sure that I’m not promoting that kind of elitism in your little darlins’ or mine. Yet, we may as well accept the fact that the good ole’ American hot dog just doesn’t pack the punch it used to when we were kids. Today’s equivalent of “our” hot dog is probably just as Prestonwood Notebook Hot dining events sizzle in July July and August will be “hot, hot, hot” when it comes to dining events at Prestonwood. One event already has been sold out, but members can still make reservations for two others. The “sold out” sign has been posted for the club’s annual “Beach Blast,” set for Friday, July 26, in the clubhouse. “The Entertainers” will be the featured band and the dress will be casual beach attire. Loafers Beach Club shag instruc tors Wes and Sandra May will give shagging lessons from 8 to 9 p.m. and the band’s three-hour gig starts right after that. Richard Cloudt, a caricature artist, will be available from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. It all starts with a buffet dinner at 7:30 p.m. The buffet dinner will feature roasted pork, boiled shrimp, fried perch, and trimmings that will include key lime pie. One night before the shaggers do their thing, Prestonwood will host a far more formal dining occasion. That would be the “Bastille Masquerade,” a five-star dining event scheduled for Friday, July 25. In celebrating the 208th anniver sary of Bastille Day, diners will be decked out in black-tie formal wear or costumes from the period of the French Revolution. Masquerading servers will be offering classical French cuisine (including sautded swordfish and caviar cake) as well as French wines. The affair starts at 7:30 p.m. with champagne and hors d’ oeuvres in the formal bar, followed by dinner at 8 p.m. in the formal dining room. Floride Allen will be playing the grand piano throughout the evening. A call to Edward Simpkins at 467-2566 can make reservations. Information on costume rental can be obtained at the time of reserva tions. Shaggers and masqueraders will have three weeks of rest before the next major event: a murder mystery dinner theater scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 16. Light hors d’ oeuvres will be served at 7 p.m. The show will start at 7:30 p.m. and a buffet dinner will be served at 7:45 p.m. The murder mystery is titled “Perish the Thought,” and will fea ture such unusual characters as psy chic channelers, crystal ball readers and palmists. Reservations, limited to 120 peo ple, can be made by calling the front desk at 467-2566. Those who want to participate in the mystery can advise the front desk when calling in reservations. Empty salsa, sour cream and chips into Individual serving bowls and place simple to prepare and twice as nutritious. It is probably called something like Taco Salad. (See! You did all that sweating for nothing! Probably thought I was going to say some thing like, “This July 4, serve your kids lobster on a stick. To make a festive presentation, marinate him in blueberry juice, sprinkle him with those little confetti words that say ‘Born in the USA,’ (they don’t make them, but you can keep look ing) and serve him up with an American flag in one claw and a sparkler in the other.”) Ha! Fooled you! But, I do kind of like the idea. Here’s another novel idea, its called work. Introduce that to your kids if you haven’t already. Hand this story to them, and let them know how privileged they are to be allowed to follow instructions. (Along with the words, “Bet ya can’t do it!”) I chose a Tex-Mex theme because it is the food my kids love most. (Next to that expensive seafood with the eyes and the legs.) If your July 4 celebration will include sev eral families, ask each family to prepare a menu item (preferably in an appropriately ethnic serving dish) that reflects another culture or ethnic group. Since the one thing all Americans have in common is that we or our descendents came from another country, what better way to cele brate the independence of the United States than through celebrat ing its melting pot status? In addition to an ethnic menu, my kids thought it would be fun on this day for the family to do a few ethnic activities; in this case, for the fami ly to dance the Macarena together, and to serve the Tostito chips and lettuce in upside down straw hats lined with Saran Wrap, and to paint the outside of disposable cereal bowls with colorful poster paints for use as serving dishes for each of the other ingredients. (This way everyone can choose the ingredients that will go into their individual sal ads.) Your kids can get as elaborate and creative as your resources (primari ly time, energy, and patience!) allow for. But, the sense of pride and accomplishment that kids get from nurturing others through their own efforts at food preparation is priceless, so after presenting the kids with this recipe and ingredi ents, just relax, have fun, and turn them over to me!
