A LETTER TO JOE DUR>rt[ARD CREECH
November 2k, 1955
Dear Joe,
We want to congratulate you as
being picked for the honorary all—
Conference team and to let you know how
proud of you we are.
All though we didn’t back you up
with the type of ball you would want to
write home about, still, when the rates
cf special recognition were polled, your
name came out on top.
As a team captain and team player,
you were excellent. When a man needed
to be blocked, you blocked him; when
a man had to be tackled, you tackled
him. If a hard decision had to be made,
you vrere there to help out and when the
going would get a wee bit rough for
of us, you would be there for us
to "lean”on.
We’re going to miss you next year,
Joe, but we're hoping that you will be
helping another school as much as you
heloed us.
Play the game of life as you played
the game of football and you can’t help
but win.
Best of luck.
Your team-mates
BASKETBALL
^'Has anyone seen my tennis shoes?"
"Wliere are my pedalpushers?"
"Janice, dn you have an extra
shirt?"
These familiar sounds were ringing
the locker again as the first signs of
basketball season.
The first day of practice forty-
four tried out. After they had practiced
together for about a week the coaches
cut the team down to twenty girls.
These girls played hard scrimage games
Under the watchful eyes of Coach Brown
and Coach Bain. Finally, on December 2,
1955, a Friday afternoon, the team was
announced. It was as follows: Evelyn
Overby and Sonja Johnson, the teams only
two seniors) Janice Edwards, Virginia
Britt, Pope Hardee, Norma Kistler,
and Dessie Bell Holland, the five
juniors; and from the sophomore class,
Jean Parker, Kathryn Lee, Ann Booker,
Phyllis Lee, Sylvia Price, Betty
McGowan, Winnie Underwood, and Anne
Mallard. Freshmen on the team are Polly
Davis, Sashie Skinner, and Nancy Lassi
ter,
All the girls proved their ability
Tuesday night December 6. Since this
was the first game of the season, every
one was very excited. Smithfield girls
had an easy win over Benson, Let’s
hope the good luck continues.
Keep it up girls’,
Anne Mallard
