The freshmen seem to be mingling with the rest of us and have lost that dazed look. Here let me say that I heartily welcome you—^the class of 1961—to Smithfield High I You have a wonderful treat in store for you in S, H. S, for the next four years. The pep rallies, opeh^JiQiiaeil,_^ame s, danc^, P4§ys~rnQw you are really a part of it allX-^ Yes, you've waited a long time for this year I Now that it's here make the most of it I Remember that the grades and records you make will be with you the rest of your life.- All of us—sophomores, juniors, and seniors—join together and say "Glad you're here I', Hope you enjoy your freshmen year as much as we did Editor MUSIC Over twenty years ago public school music was introduced into Smithfield, Beginning in the first grade, pupils were en couraged to love good music. As they grew older, many of them desired to pursue their interest further by studying piano, voice, or band. Several talented musi cians emerged, and Smithfield School began to win laurels in musical competitions. Students in piano and voice were awarded scholarships for summer study, the Glee Club began consistantly to bring back a Superior rating from the district contest—festival, and more recently we have seen the name of the band added to the honor role. Today Smithfield is recognized throughout North Caroliiia for its outstanding musical achievements. All of these accomplishments have come about as a result of the seed that was planted over twenty years ago-> This year another seed has been planted. Art is now a part of our school's curriculum. Pupils are being taught to understand and to appreciate the paintings of the masters, and they are be ginning to apply artistic prin ciples to their own attempts* Already certain students are showing signs of promise, and we hope that through art instruction their gifts may be nurtured and developed to instill into them a desire to further their training. Whether these young people become fashion designers, architects, or just housewives who enjoy painting for a hobby, their lives will be greatly enriched by their knowledge of art. In the future we are looking forward to witnessing this new seed grow into a tree bearing many fruits, Nancy Lassiter
