.qMTTHFTFlTD HIGH TIKES HARVARD SCHOL/iR Recently, Dewey Lawson received a letter from Harvard University stating he had been chosen as a Harvard Scholar which is one of the biggest honors that can come to a freshman at this outstand ing institution of higher learning. This recognition came to Dewey because of his fine high school record, his high score on the college entrance examination,^ and his unusual record of extra-curricular activities, A substantial scholarship is an important part of this honor. We are all proud of Dewey, We know that he will justify the confidence that Harva,rd has placed in him and that he will make an outstanding record there. Padgett, Ann Allen, Cahol Ann Wickham, Kathie Lassiter, Kay Boyette, and Joey Overby. Gail Foos ANNUALS A rush of clammering feet was heard in the halls of S.H.S. on Hay 8, as the 3:25 bell rang. A rumor had been heard among the students that the long awaited annuals had arrived. At the end of 6th period, the announcement was made that all students were to return to their homerooms, Yes, the annuals were here. This was a day everyone would remember. We know that much work and time had to be given by those ^o worked on the 1962 "Shield". Our congratulations go to the editors, Etewey Lawson and Bill Taylor, and to the others who had a part in making this a day to remember - an annual to cherish and a year brou^t back through pictures. Our hats are off to you. Donnie Coates HIGH SCHOOL PIANO RECITAL On May 23, at the chapel hour, losses Canaday and Neighbors presented their high school piano students in a recital. All of the participants per formed in a most capable manner. Those taking part in this program were the following: Kaye Coates, Becky Norton, Mary Lillie Talton, David Upton, Susan Barnes, Jenny Talton, Linda Parrish, Pam Jordan, Carolyn Lewis, Sallie JOEY OVERBY AND DEWEY LAWSON WIN AWARDS Joey Overby and Dewey Lawson are co-winners of the Stella Johnston Memor ial Award which has been presented each year since 1947 By t he Aeolian Music Club of Smithfield to the outstanding music student of the Snithfield High School graduating class. The award is basdd on musical achievement throughout the four years of high school and the contribution the student has made to the music of the school and community. Presentation of the award was made by Mrs. Woodrow Batten, president of the Aeolian Music Biub'^ Tuesday night. May 8, at the conclusion of the Fine ^ts S^- posium sponsored in the South^ ^nithfield Elementary School by the Aeolian Music ^ Club, the Junior Woman’s Club, the Senior Woman’s Club, and the Garden Club. Dewey was also presented the fourth annual John Philip Sousa Band Award as the most ouifestanding graduating member of the Senior Band at the annual Spring Concert on May. 4. SAFETY CONTEST The Woman’s Club of Snithfield sponsored a safety slogan contest, Clifton McCown won first place with his slogan, "Speeding can be a grave mistake'.' Anna RatcljJ*fe won second prize and Linda Lewis won third prize. At the close of the contest, the Woman’s Club gave a breakfast for all l0eu-.agers who could attend, Approxiraate- ly sixty attended. Several door prizes were won by the students and the winners of the slogan contest were announced. Corporal Pierce of the State Highway Patrol gave a talk on Traffic Safety, Chief of Police, Norton, gave a talk on Traffic Safety also. After the breakfast, all the teen agers with cars formed a parade and were the first to go through the 1962 Safety Check Lane, Tyler Edmonson
