I SMETHFIliLD HIGH TIMES Mr&JL COMMENCEMEl^T The baccalaureate sermon will be delivered by the Reverend Donald W. Shriver, Jr.^ on Sunday evening. May 24, at 8:CX) o’clock, in the school auditorium,Reverend Shriver is the Presbyterian chaplain at North Carolina State CollegCi He is a native of Norfolk, Virginia. He graduated from Ihvidson College in 1951 s.s valedictorian of his class. He holds a B,D. Degree from the Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. He also has a Ph, D. Degree in Religion and Society from Harvard Univer-' ' sity. He was pastor of the Linwood Presbyterian Church in Gastonia from 1956-1959 Reverend Shriver has been active in the various organizations of his church. He has also vfritten a number of articles for church publications. Reverend Shriver was the Tar Heel of the Week in the Raleigh News and Observer on May 10, 1964. In 1953 he married Peggy Ann Leu, of Pella, Iowa, They Imve three children: Gregory, lOj Viargaret Mn, 7; aid Timothy, 3. Special music will be given by a group from the Girls’ Glee Club under the direction of Miss Flora Parker. Local ministers will assist with this service. The graduating exercises will be held in the school auditorium on Fiiday even- ing. May 29, at 8:00 o’clock. The speaker for this occasion will be the Reverend La Fon C. Vereen of Raleigh, He is the Executive Director of the Board of Missions and Church Extension for the North Carolina Conference of the Methodist Church. Reverend Vereen is a native of Latta, South Carolina. He has a B. S, Degree from Clemson College ani a B, D, Degree from the Duke Ibiversity Divinity School, He has served pastorates in Durham, Oriental, Stonewall, Fremont, Warrenton, and Farmville, North Carolina, He is a past presidait of the Durham Ministerial Association. He was co-counsellor of tte North Carolina European Caravan going to Europe in the summer of 1954. They visited France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Belgium, and England, working with the Methodist churches in. those countries. He is married to the former Joyce Griffin of Lemon Springs, North Carolina. They have two children: Joyce Iferie, age 18, and Ronald lioyd, age 12, The salutatory will be given by Joan Cooke, daughter of Mrs, W, L, Cooke, Route SnithfieLd, The valedictory will be given by Whitty Whitley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry H. kliitley of Route 3, Smithfield. Following the valedictory, those graduating will receive their diplomas. Special senior awards will also be given at this time. The naishals for the comnBncement exercises come from the junior class. Van Denning, president of the junior class, will be the chief marshal. The other marshals are the following: Susan Barnes, Janet Lee, Jean Lee, ■’^eggjr Lee, Sandra Lee, Dianne Massengill, Anna ^atcliffe, Tamara Strickland, Jenny Talton, Mary LilHe Talton, and Ginger WdLlons.
