SillTHFIELD HIGH TIMES Page 18 THE BAND — SPIRIT OF SHS This year’s band has really added to the school spirit at pep rallys, chapel, and football games. Have you ever wondered what football games would be without the music? Just dead I Counting the eighth graders, who are helping us out during football season, the band has 55 members, in cluding the two majorettes, Hope Allen and Shelley Castleberry, On October 2, 1965, our band attended Band Day at Wake Forest College, along with 19 other bands of North Carolina, We played several tunes •'mass band style” at half time. The trip lasted all day, and we were rather tired when we got home, but everyone had a great time. The officers elected by the mem bers are; President, Butch Allen; Secretary, Laura Ray; Treasurer; Pdcky Dupree; Publicity Manager, Don Westbrook; and Librarians, Becky Wright, Margy Hinnant, Hope Allen, and Shelley Castleberry, Margy Hinnant NEWS FROM THE BOYS’ AND FRESHMEN GIRLS’ GLEE CLUB At the first meetiijgof the Glee Club, this year’s officers were elected. They are as follows; President, Robert Sigmon; Vice-President, Craig Barbour; Secretary, Bonnie %rd; Reporter, Bette Barnes, In keeping with the new fads, we are singing folk songs such as ’’Five Hundred Miles." We are preparing for Christmas by singing "Silent Night" and "We Three Kings." Bette Barnes; GIRLS’ GLEE CLUB ENTERTAINS On the night of November 9^ 1965, fifty-four girls, with knocking knees, stood before a crowd of two hundred and fifty people. On this night, the Smith- field High School Girls’ Glee Club, directed by Mrs. John R. Browning, sang at a banquet for the Chamber of Commerce. The musical program con sisted of "Sing Out" by Stuard-King, "Kindness" by Warnick, and selections from the Broadway musical play, Brigadoon, Accompanists were, on the piano, Gloria Little and Rhonda McLean, and on the drums, Thomas Capps. Janet Sellers BAND PERFORMS On the fifth of November, the SHS band gave a program to the student body. The Students marched in to the sounds of "The Sound of Music," "People’,’ and "The Sweetest Sounds," The following selections were played: "Pass Me " "Spiritual," "Bolero" (brass ensemble), "The King, and I," "Jim" (Clarinet quartet), "Downtown," "A Taste of Honey," "Do the Freddie," and "Seadragon." Mr, Rogers then led the students in a new song, "Hail to the Varsity," After a few cheers, the program was concluded with the "Alma Mater," Margy Hinnant AN AUTUMN THOUGHT The hills are alive With the sound of musia With songs they have sung for a thousand years. —Oscar Hammerstein II (The Sound of Music)
