SlffTHFIELD HIGH TIMES Page 5 Two COMMENTS BY MARYBUNDY POPUUTION EXPLOSION? On December 1 around five o’clock, the population of Smithfield grew by at least a thousand. The streets of '^Ur town were lined with excited and anxious people. Why all the excite ment? Why all the people? The answer, of course, is the annual Christmas parade which attracted kids tnom one to ninety-two from all over '^ehnston County. Bands played T^miliar Christmas songs, and majorettes did all kinds of steps, ^^autifully decorated floats, sponsored by local Smithfield merchants, ^®re adorned by our own SHS girls. ^cal beauty salon entries included latest in hair styles and Colors — pink, blue, and green, to Coordinate your ensemble. The clowns ^^ded much to the parade by changing Scarfs into canes and fanning specta tors because it was so warm that stoning. I understand that their exploded for the last time be- s^Use it actually caught on fire. finale of the parade was the tig, jolly man himself, Santa Claus, ^0 delighted all the children. I ^ sure that all who attended the J^^i'ade left with the fefsling that ^tristmas was just around the corner. SAT On Saturday morning, December 4> ^bout 200 seniors from across Johnston bounty gathered in the Smithfield School cafeteria to take the dreaded ^bolastic Aptitude Test. The test nation-wide and is taken by high School seniors to assist them in ^^lecting a college. It consists Verbal and mathematics sections, is^ to say the least, difficult, few returned in the afternoon to the achievement tests in cer- subjects. On behalf of all the J^ddents, I would like to thank the ■'teachers who gave up their Saturday ^mrning to help supervise. THE VAGABOND PLi\YERS On Tuesday mornihg, November 30, a group of dramatists, the Vagabond Players , gave a performance at SHS entitled "The World of Carl Sandburg". The cast included Helen Bragdon,.Dan Bly, Molly Friedel, and Robroy Farquhar, each experienced in Broadway productions, television, and movie productions, "The V/orld of Carl Sandburg" in cluded a dramatization of parts of Sandburg’s life, and many types of the poet’s works: poems,, biography, a collection of folk songs, and character sketches. The program also included bits of humor and wit with Sandburg’s favorite "corny" jokes and funny stories. The per formance provided just the right balance of entertainment and education to be of value to the student body. This collection of Sandburg’s works was designed specifically to stimulate interest in the poet- biographer and to encourage the audience to read his writings, John Kelly IMPRESSIONS COUNT (Continued) Since the beginning of this 1965- 1966 school year, attending SHS has been a most enjoyable experience for me. I really do enjoy working with all of ny instructors and schoolmates. I think this is a fine school with very good qualities, and I am very proud to be a student here.
