SUPREME COURT TO HEAR TENNESSEE UNIVERSITY CASE NEW YORK, — Argument on two procedural phases of a suit to secure admission of Negro students to the University of Tennessee will be heard by the United States Supreme Court during the week of January 7, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has been informed. The suit involves the cases of Gene Mitchell Gray, Lincoln Anderson Blakeney, Joseph Hutch Patterson and Jack Alex ander whose applications for admission to the law and gradu ate schools of the university were rejected by university aut horities solely on racial grounds. Following rejection of their applications, the NAACP filed suit on their behalf in the fede ral court seeking to enjoin en forcement of the state’s segrega tion statute on the basis of which the applications had been turned down. In April, 1950, a three judge federal court disavowed jurisdiction on the grounds that the segregation laws were con stitutional, and ordered the case to proceed before U. S. District Judge Robert Taylor. Although Judge Taylor ruled that the university acted illega lly in refusing to accept the com plainants, he failed to order their admission, whereupon NAACP attorneys filed a direct appeal in the United States Supreme Court. Methodist Leaders To Hold Training Schools For Race NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Negro Methodist leaders have recom mended a series of annual train ing schools for “undergraduate” ministers and supply pastors seeking to meet the church’s educational requirements. The plan of special instruction, entailing 400 classroom hours, would enable such licensed Ne gro preachers to qualify in four to six years for full membership in their annual conferences. Supplementary correspondence courses also would be available. Similiar schools are held now as “in service training projects” for Methodist ministers who are seminary graduates or who have otherwise met education re quirements. The proposal was made here December 4 by four members of a “findings committee” who met with the Rev. J. Richard Spann, educational director of the Methodist Church’s Commission on Ministerial Training. “Your Safety Is My Business” DON’T CAP YOUR TIRES Until You See Our New Molds.
