nity-based. locally-initiated devel
opment projects in this volatile
region of the world.
A 1993 attempt to climb Pakistan’s
treacherous K2 almost cost
Mortensen his life, but local vil
lagers saved him. He consequently
founded the Central Asia Institute
to help them escape theif poverty
and poor conditions, and during
the past decade has devoted his life
to that cause.
