Town Cited for Toxins Statesville was one of 15 North Carolina cities cited by state regu lators for having toxic substances in their water systems during the past year. Other systems dted in the area include Monroe, Kannapolis, Lincoln and Union Counties. The toxins, according to the state report, were released by chemicals used to make water levels safe from bacteria. According to the Environ mental Protection Agency, the chemicals aren’t harmful immedi ately but can increase cancer risk if taken in over a long period of time. Statesville was hit with citations twice for the toxins. The occurrences, officials believe, were related to the 1992 drought. According to Joe Hudson, Statesville water resources director, the chemicals likely formed last year when the city had to sharply reduce the volume of water it pumped.
