Booze It &
Lose It
Campaign
Begins
Raleigh - State and local law
enforcement officers arrested 699
motorists for driving while
impaired (DWI) during the first
three days of the 10th anniversary
“Booze It & Lose It” campaign
that began on Nov. 19.
“We gave motorists fair warning
(last week) when we launched this
campaign,” said Darrell Jemigan,
director of the Governor’s
Highway Safety Program. “If peo
ple choose to drive after drinking,
they should be prepared to meet
one of the hundreds of North
Carolina law enforcement officers
who are actively supporting this
program.”
Counties with the highest DWI
totals during the first days of the
campaign include Mecklenburg,
55; Wake, 51; and Robeson, 36.
Buncombe and Cabarrus counties
each posted 25 DWI arrests.
In addition to impaired-driving
charges, officers statewide issued
1,616 safety belt and 256 child
passenger safety violations during
1,671 checkpoints and stepped-up
patrols. A total of 15,930 traffic
and criminal citations were issued
during the three-day period.
Officers also wrote 5,441 speeding
tickets and discovered a total of
262 drug charges, 25 stolen vehi
cles and 12 fugitives from justice.
Among them were two out-of-state
sex offenders.
