JANUARY 20,2005 704-872-1200 • editor#ireddlckizen.com Safe StatewfflftNC 28677 • 504 Bob Plyler/CITIZEN The European version of the violin is thought to have been taken to Egypt by Napoleon in one of his campaigns. Whatever the history, the instrument is now played all over the world and good ole’ Southern Bluegrass tunes would be hard-pressed to be played without giving them a good fiddlin.’ Glen Alexander, of Charlotte, picked up much of his playing skills from his dad who loved to play bluegrass. A two-time fiddle champion, Alexander pass es his skills along to students at their weekly meeting in the old jail in downtown Statesville. He is shown here with nine-year-old student Sierra Wike. Classes are for all ages. The Iredell Arts Council number is 704-873-6100. Alexander can be reached at 704-522-0534. Impromptu coNCERT-Violin students Sierra Wike, center, and Leah Stroud team up for a little tune-playing while waiting for the arrival of their teacher. Both are students of Glen Alexander in his violin-playing classes at the old jail in downtown Statesville. Leah’s mom, Annette, is on the left and Sierra’s grandmother, Nancy Sipes, is standing.
