Amanda Weiser, chairman of the Centennial Celebration and an Alderman, too, finds herself in the perfect position to take a look at the town’s past while looking forward to its future. That’s not a bad thing, she feels, for Troutman people to be doing right now. “It gives us some grounding to know our heritage and to talk to people about what the town used to be,” she said. “The Aldermen know it’s going to grow and want it to grow the right way.” If there’s insight to be gained from Troutman’s past, a lot of the right people will be attending the Troutman Centennial Celebration. All town folk over 90 years of age are being honored during the program at Holy Trinity. The public is cordially invited as well. Keynote speaker for the event will be Dr. Gray Freeze, professor of history at Catawba College and a native of Iredell County. Local historians Jimmy Alley and Danny Ervin will provide additional historical insights. Many old photos and scrapbooks of days gone by in Troutman will be on display. Two other events of celebration will be held later in the year. The Marine Corps League, which holds its regular meetings at the Troutman Town Hall, is getting together a Fourth of July Parade. They hope to have at least 100 entries including bands, floats and beauty queens. Dennis Cleary, who chairs the event, wants to provide U.S. flags for everybody to wave. The final celebration - yet another parade - is scheduled for Sept. 17 in coordination with the South Iredell Homecoming Parade. The parade will end up at the Troutman Fair Grounds where celebrants can enjoy the contemporary band Cookie and David Saleeby’s blue grass band. There will also be inflatable rides such as the Moonwalk, and fireworks.
