Lee Ann Sherrill IREDELL CITIZEN AS WINTER ROLLS ON, KAREN Haynie will be sleeping under a quilt made and given with a lot of love. * Her new queen-size, log-cabin patterned quilt has made quite a journey. Members of the Beaucatcher Quilting Bee in Ashesville made the quilt to honor long-time friend and Bee member Jean Haynie, Karen’s mother, who passed away last year. Twenty-six of the Bee’s members took home packets of fabric strips to make a cabin square. One member volunteered to stitch together the honorary quilt on a long-arm sewing machine. After the quilt was finished, the Bee’s decided to raffle it and use the monies raised to help Karen with her expenses to participate in the LifeSpan Enrichment program in Troutman. LifeSpan, a non-profit organization, began in 1973 to support children and adults with disabilities. Tickets were sold from the piedmont to the mountains and $700 was raised. On Dec. 20, members of the Beaucatcher Quilting Bee came to Statesville to let Karen draw the lucky ticket. The winner turned out to be Micki Batte of Ashesville, a member of the Beaucatcher Quilting Bee. “Jean was a special, wonderful, humorous lady and as a way to honor her, we turned to quilting,” Micki said. On a recent Friday morning, Micki made the trip from Asheville to LifeSpan to give Karen a “warm” surprise. Soon after saying hello, Micki showed See Lifetime Quilt page 9
