Citizens’ Academy Lee Ann Sherrill IREDELL CITIZEN Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a police officer and deal w ith risks ■ that come with the job? I To help people in the community better understand police work, the City of Statesville Police Department recently created the 10-week Citizens’ Academy as part of the Weed and Seed Program. \ The course allows 12 community members to spend three hours each week “experiencing” the police department. During the course, “cadets” learn about the duties of a police officer and discover career opportunities available at the department. To take the class each cadet must sign a waiver, agree to attend 90 percent of the classes, spend a minimum of three hours observing police telecommunicators and take a “ride along” with an officer. The most recent academy, which started March 29, included folk ranging in age from 19 to 50. Group members, from all over the county, included two married couples. Some took the class because they wanted to get into law enforcement; others just wanted to learn more about those who “serve and protect” them. The first session was a basic history of the Statesville Police Department going back to its start with two police officers in 1863. The session included a | tour of the Department and a visit to the hectic telecommunications room where Statesville Police Department Citizens’ Academy cadet Nakia Campbell gets a “bite” from K-9 officer Dessell.
