Smith Chapel Celebrates Homecoming and New Pastor Smith Chapel Church in Union Grove will introduce its new pastor, Rev. Sam Childs, at the 113th homecoming celebration Sunday, Aug. 5. The service begins at 10:30 a.m. with the St. John’s Lutheran Praise Team and Choir from Statesville. Clay Lunsford and friends and various musicians and singers from the church will perform. Pastor Childs will bring the morning message. A covered dish lunch follows immediately after the service. No afternoon singing is planned, Rev. Childs is originally from Texas where he attended Jacksonville Baptist College. He did further studies at East Texas Baptist College and Stephen F. Austin State University. He also earned a degree in education (mathematics) from Tennessee Temple University and his master of divinity from Temple Baptist Theological Seminary. He has pastored Liberty Grove Baptist in North Wilkesboro and was an associate pastor of Diamond Hill in Statesville and supply pastor at Yadkin Baptist. He and his wife Martha will be singing at the homecoming service. All are invited. Rev. Sam Childs and his wife Martha David Underdown, center, was honored as Business Associate of the Year by the Llerderi ABWA Chapter at its July meeting. At left is Jill Tolbert, chapter vice president. Ruth James, who introduced Underdown is at right. Fourteen members and three guests, Donna VanStory, Mary Ann Minnish and Underdown attended the meeting. The Chapter will help Greensboro chapters with the national ABWA convention in September. The next meeting is Aug. 6 at Odd Fellows Lodge. Reservations are due by Friday noon before the meeting.
