Race City Wiener Dog Race Scheduled for Sept. 8 Mooresville-It’s time to start working out those “Wiener Dogs.” The second Annual Race City Wiener Dog Race will be held in downtown Mooresville Saturday Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. The Wiener races are 50-yard Dachshund “sprints” to the checker flag. Owners can register their little racers from 10-11 a.m. for a registration fee of $10. All dogs need to be current on their shots. The races starts at 11 a.m. sharp and will be divided into four ages divisions. The race consists of several heats in each age division with the finalist from each heat advancing to the final race in his or her age category. Winners from the final race get a Grand Wiener Trophy donated by Custom Trophy and Engraving in Charlotte. All profits will benefit the Lake Norman Rescue in Mooresville. Last year over 200 Dachshunds raced and raised over $4000 that aided in finding homes for pets in shelters nearing their last days. Anyone or any company wishing to make a donation or volunteer should call Roberta Roberts at 704 402-8555. Iredell Senior Center offers a variety of classes, services, and activities Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as evening activities. For information or to register, call 704-873-8568. The Center is located at 344 E. Front St., Statesville. Water Color Classes for Beginners- Senior citizens will learn to paint easy landscapes, still life, or a beautiful flower on Tuesdays, from 1 —* 3 p.m. with instructor Ron Walters. Each participant must furnish his or her own art supplies, for about $20. A supply list is available at the Iredell Senior Center. There is no fee but registration is required. Call 704-873 8568. Annual Ladies’ Tea- is offered for the senior women of the community. A tea hat is required and other finery is appreciated. The program is about the health benefits of tea drinking and features a hat contest, tea table setting and decorating contest, prizes, and refreshments. No fees, but donations and refreshment contributions are appreciated. Register by Monday, Aug. 21, at 704-873-8568 and let staff know if you are contributing refreshments or setting and decorating a tea table. Tai Chi- the next session begins Sept. 10 with instructor Mike Gentile. Exercises improve strength, balance, and blood pressure and promotes tissue oxygenation. Classes meet Mondays at 9 a.m. cost is $36 for six classes. Call 704-873-8568 to register. Line Dance- next session starts Sept. 12 with instructor JoAnn Payne. Classes meet Wednesdays at 1 p.m. Wear comfortable leather soled shoes. Fee is $10 for six classes. Call to 704-873-8568 to register. BINGO Birthday Bash!- all senior citizens are invited to play BINGO, win prizes, have refreshments, and socialize Friday, Aug. 17, at 1:30 p.m., in the Iredell Senior Center. There will be special recognition of birthday ladies and gents and cake for all. No fees or registration involved. Senior Center Singles- seniors who are single and 60 years or better, are invited to the Iredell Senior Center on Thursday, August 9 and 23, at 2 p.m. for a social time and fellowship. Make Your Own Greeting Cards- join in the making of rubber stamped greeting cards on Tuesday, Aug. 21, at 10 a.m. This month’s theme is textures. For a $5 materials fee, instructor Nancy McKay provides everything needed to create three greeting cards and envelopes. Register by Friday, Aug. 17, by calling the center. Free Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar Checks- are available for senior citizens on Friday, Aug. 3, from 9-11 a.m. Courtesy of Iredell Memorial Hosptial. Lipid Profile for Senior Citizens- measuring total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides is offered Tuesday, Aug. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the center for a fee of $10. An appointment is required. Davis Regional Medical Center provides the service for senior citizens 60 years old and better. Call the Center for an appointment. Free Blood Pressure Check- is offered Thursday, Aug. 9, 10 a.m. to noon at the Center. Service is provided by Iredell Home Health. Just drop-in. Blood Drive Planned Chestnut Grove Community Center and the Statesville Branch NAACP have scheduled their semiannual blood drive Saturday, Aug. 11. The drive begins at 11 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. The public is invited to donate at this time. Chestnut Grove Community Center is located at 233 Chestnut Grove Road, Statesville. A number of chronic diseases require repeated blood transfusions. Sickle cell anemia, an inherited disease, primarily affects African Americans and strikes approximately 1 in 400 blacks. Charles Drew, an African American physician, revolutionized medicine in 1940 when he pioneered the system now used for separating and preserving blood. Orchestra Performs Mooresville- The Lake Norman Orchestra has scheduled these performances for the fall. On Saturday, Aug. 25, the orchestra performs at 7 p.m. at St. Therese Catholic Church, 217 Brawley School Road, Mooresville. Tickets are $10 each; children 12 and under get in free.
