Sharing these mishaps and knowing they’ve all experienced the same things makes them feel like they aren’t alone. Volunteer Michael Reid said. Reid is a Lion’s Club member and volunteers at the camp for several weeks each summer. Reid was the only volunteer not visually impaired in some way, so he’s been doing a lot of shuttling. In addition to volunteers, the camp employs around 15campcounselors. Many are exchange students from England and other countries. Nikki Appleby of Norfolk, England, found out about the camp through a careers advisor. “I wanted to do something different,” she said. “I wanted to get out of England.” After putting her application through Camp America, she was selected to come for the summer to Camp Dogwood. Register for Flag Football The Statesville Recreation and Parks Department will hold registration for its NFL Flag Football league Aug. 13 - 31, for boys and girls 6 - 10 years of age. Two leagues are being offered: NFL Ultimate, for six and seven year olds which is ideal for younger players because there are no set positions and everyone touches the ball; and NFL Flag, for 8 - 10 year olds. Registrations will be accepted at the Recreation and Parks Administrative Office, 450 Signal Hill Drive, Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Grace Park Recreation Center, 510 West Bell Street, Monday - Thursday, 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. and Friday - Saturday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. The registration fee is $5 for City Residents and $10 for Non-City Residents. A birth certificate is required for first year participants. The age cutoff for each league is Sept. 1. The league begins in early September and ends by Nov. 1.
