Continued from page 7 Videography music. In high school he was picked for the Pittsburgh Youth Orchestra and went on to All City and All State bands. With a long mop of hair, pegged pants and an array of “zoot suits” and looking every bit the city kid, Jim went off to school on a grant in-aid to Concord College, West Virginia, a rural environment totally alien to him. There he met, “the love of my life,” Mavis Surface a quiet, small town girl of a different faith (she’s Methodist, he’s Catholic). In spite of entirely different backgrounds and contrasting personalities, they clicked. “She was quiet,” Jim said. “I wasn’t used to that!” “He had a fun personality,” said Mavis. “He talked, so I didn’t have to.” Library Host Local Author Statesville resident Tommy James, author of Be Reconciled! Meaningful Steps for Mending Relationships, will host a discussion program at the Iredell County Public Library on Thursday Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. James and his wife Pat have served as counselors, trainers and seminar leaders in the Healing House Network founded by Chester and Betsy Kylstra using the Restoring the Foundations ministry program. Be Reconciled! Meaningful Steps for Mending Relationships, “is intended as a guide for Christians who have been sinned against by another person, so they may know the biblical and spiritual way to resolve conflicts and be reconciled to an offender.” James will discuss the ideas in his book during his program. James’ program is free to the public. Call 704-878-3098 or e-mail pcarter@ co.iredell.nc.us. for details. Hoover Reunion Set Friends, relatives and descendents of the late Joseph Hoover will hold their annual reunion on Sunday Sept. 9, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Herman Lutheran Church, 110 Mt. Herman Rd., Statesville. Bring a well-filled picnic baskets and drinks. Paper products will be furnished. For information contact Ruth James at 704-872*4451. --*-' - * On the tiny campus, their usual dates were simply going to the library where Mavis studied and Jim “sat and doodled on a paper.” In spite of outward differences, they forged strong bonds because of some common characteristics. Their families and their communities, as different as they were, were strong and stable. From their parents and friends, they had learned to treasure honesty and friendship. Those things have held them together over 52 years of mamage. “We’ve always trusted one another,” Jim said. “We always felt very good together. We’ve raised our kids the same way, kind of 50 50. We never argued in front of the kids.” After follow-up questions by David, the session ended. The grandfather clock down the hall, apparently put in silent mode for the occasion, had ticked away two hours. Now would come the hard part, but also the part that is the most fun. The recently captured rough footage, along with selected family photos, photos of Jim in his years as band director and teacher, photos of Mavis in her years at Cool Spring and A.D. Rutherford School, favorite songs and even old film clips would be forged into an hour-long “professional video biography.” Decades from now, perhaps on wall-mounted plasma TV’s, Calabrese boys and girls will meet their progenitors, Jim and Mavis Calabrese, talking at them from the ancestral music room in the ranch house in east Iredell. Can there be any doubt that at least one child will pipe up and ask, “What’s a ‘zoot suit?”’ For more information about From Generation to Generation LLC, or information on preserving family legacies, contact the Comers at 704-880-3437.
