Make yourself a checklist and consider these tasks. Plow or turn the garden to rid it of non-productive vegetable plants and weeds. Plowing will also break the life cycle of many insects and diseases. Make a sketch of the garden to plan a rotation program for the next growing season. Take soil samples, especially to determine the need for lime this fall. This task is recommended every three years. The laboratory service is free once you mail samples to the NC Department of Agriculture. The report will also give fertilizer recommendations. Prepare future planting areas and beds now by adding organic matter like leaf mulch compost or manure to heavy clay soils. Take soil samples of the existing ground and the organic material before or after mixing to assure the status for plant growth. This is a common problem because of the shallowness of tree roots and heavy shade. If the soil under trees can be tilled three to four inches, a shade blend of grass like fescue, bluegrass and creeping fescue can be planted. If the area is extremely shaded, an ornamental or perennial ground cover might be the best option. Control broadleaf weeds such as garlic, chickweed and henbit in the lawn. Most newly seeded or over seeded areas should not be sprayed until several mowings. The granular formulation of herbicide for broadleaf weeds is not very effective. Prune off problem tree limbs that are diseased, dead or damaged. Delay heavy pruning until January and later. Prune only lightly to shape up evergreens. Live with Bermuda grass as best you can until next summer or over seed it with annual ryegrass to give temporary green color to the lawn. Cool season grasses such as fescue can still be planted; however, the growth will not be vigorous until late winter or unless we have an extended warm period. On existing lawns, fertilize by Thanksgiving to help plant store up food reserves in the root system. 704-873-6334»704-87M999 Now has the new leading product for: Reducing Cholesterol Naturally .fj" Lowering Cholesterol Four Different Ways • Great Alternative to Taking Statin Drugs • Does Not Require a Prescription Stop by Cooke’s Pharmacy for an information brochure 1207 W.
