May 14 marked the 158th
anniversary of Shiloh Presbyterian
Church on Lewis Ferry Road in the
west Iredell community. The church
began in 1850 after community
Presbyterian families petitioned the
Concord Presbytery to allow the
building of a church as an offspring
of Concord Presbyterian Church on
Highway 90. In those days it was
quite a distance to travel by horse
and buggy to services at Concord
Presbyterian.
As a result the Presbytery agreed
to the organization of a small new
church on property donated by the
Thomas family and the name would
be Shiloh since the church would be
in the Shiloh Township.
A wooden log church was erected
and services were held for 50
charter members. Some came from
Concord Presbyterian and some
from Smyrna Presbyterian Church,
which disbanded after Shiloh was
built.
In 1858 one minister bought the land
in front of the church for a cemetery.
Quite a few grave markers indicate
the members and family members
who were buried in the cemetery
during the 1800’s. Numerous
ministers served Shiloh during the
early years and the church struggled
to continue during the Civil War.
The existing brick building was
dedicated in 1931 and was built
with lumber, brick, supplies and
labor donated by members. Two
wood stoves in the back of the
church provided heat.
In 1929 the Rev. F.A. Barnes
became minister at Shiloh and also
pastored at Harmony, Tabor and
Bethany Presbyterian Churches.
The depression years were difficult
so small churches shared pastors.
Shiloh was part of a three church

The first woman minister was the
Rev. Carter Shelley who went on
to become Moderator of Salem
Presbytery and served as interim
pastor at Concord Presbyterian
Church.
In 1998 Rev. W. A. Johnson, who
had retired from the Charlotte
Presbytery, became Shiloh’s supply
pastor every other Sunday and
also pastored Clio Presbyterian
Church. After Rev. Johnson’s death
in 2001, Rev. Harold King became
Shiloh’s full-time supply pastor and
continues to this date. Rev. Johnson
and Rev. King helped to bring new
memberships into Shiloh. When

members transferred to Shiloh.
Currently Shiloh is having a
