Front Street Resident Cautions Neighbors Catherine Krolfifer who lives in the 600 block of West Front Street wants her neighbors to be on the look-out. The reason for her cautionary attitude started November 6 right after she and her family first moved in and were getting the property and the garden in shape. That’s when the Krolfifer’s found two coppery colored snakes with triangular pointy heads under a pile of wood. They were, in fact, copperheads, which are North Carolina’s most plentiful, venomous snake. Those snakes were safely dispatched but there have been several other copperhead encounters since. The family found other copperheads under the doghouse, crawling in the lawn, behind the house and even in the woodchip mulch. The last incident, which occurred on a recent Monday might have been the most unnerving. Krolfifer was working with some potting soil and found a five-inch snake in that. The snake was black - the wrong color for a copperhead - but it had the familiar wedge-shaped head. In spite of its off-color, her husband determined it was a copperhead and was black because of the black potting soil. “We don’t know where they are coming from,” Krolfifer said, but she urges her neighbors to “be careful” of copperheads when looking under doghouses, in mulch piles, handling branches that have laid around a while, or while tilling the garden.
