“Wimp” Carroll To
Enter Armed Forces
When the new batch of draftees
leaves Hillsboro next week to be in
ducted into the Armed Forces
Chapel Hill High School will lose
one of its favorite sons. He is
Winfred, better known as Wimp,
Carroll who receives the distinc
tion of being the first Wildcat to
answer his country’s call since the
start of school.
Born in May of 1925, Wimp
spent his early years on his fath
er’s farm a few miles outside of
Chapel Hill. Like most children he
began school at the age of six and
it is believed that this was the age
at which he started upon his fav
orite hobby, girls. Not much is
known of his early school life but
it is rumored that Wimp had some
thing to do with the fact that many
of the elementary school teachers
are gray-headed today.

N. C. E. A. Meets
Student Council
The Chapel Hill Unit of the
North Carolina Education Asso
ciation met Tuesday, October 3 in
the Elementary School Library
with Miss Mooneyhan, the presi
dent presiding.
Dr. B. G. Childs from Duke Uni
versity was the speaker.
The following members were ap
pointed on a Constitution Revision
Committee, Mrs. Macon, Miss Sea-
well, and Mrs. Plemmons. This
committee is to study the old con
stitution and make suggestions for
any necessary changes.
It was announced at the meeting
that the North Central District
of the N. C. E. A. is to have a meet
ing Thursday, October 12, in
Goldsboro.
Mrs. Plemmons has been ap
pointed by the Advisory Commit
tee to act as Vice President until
after Christmas when Mrs. Sim
mons returns from California.
Other officers of the organiza
tion are Secretary and Treasurer,
Miss MacBryde; High School Rep
resentative, Miss Simpkins, and
Elementary Representative, Mrs.
McIntosh.
Temporary
Faculty Member
A new member of the faculty
this year is Mrs. C. E. Galbreath,
who is taking Mrs. Brabham’s
classes for the present. Mrs. Gal
breath, whose home is in Hickory,
N. C., is a graduate of Maryville
College in Maryville, Tenn. and
before coming here taught Biol
ogy in the Hanover High School in
Wilmington. She is here in Chap
el Hill with her husband Lt. Gal
breath who teaches classes in rec
ognition in the Pre-Flight School.
New Coach?
S. A. U. Tickets
Selling Too Slow
Sale of S. A. U. tickets continued
throughout the school last week but
according to reports tabulated
when this paper went to press re
sults were far below the expecta
tions of Student Council President
Helen Jane Wettach. About a
hundred and twenty-five tickets
have been sold which shows that
only half of the student body has
thus far purchased a ticket.
In an attempt to boost sales.
Council President Wettach has de
cided to pit class against class
with the winner receiving some
sort of prize. The prize, to be
awarded to the class with the high
est percentage of tickets sold, will
probably be some special privilege,
which will be decided on by Mr.
Honeycutt.

Coached ’Cat
Team Last Year
It was authoritatively reported
in the high school this week that
school officials are seeking to se
cure Lieutenant John Pecora, for
mer Wildcat coach and now serv
ing in the Marine Inactive Re
serve, as athletic director to suc
ceed Ben Hathavay who leaves No
vember first.
The final decision in the matter
now rests with the Marine Corps
which will probably decide in the
next few weeks whether or not Pe
cora will be returned to the active
duty list or given a discharge.
If he does take over the coaching
duties, Pecora will be employed as
a full time athletic director, the
first the High School has had in
two years.
Pecora, who hails from Warsaw,
coached the Wildcat football team
last fall and led his charges to the
first undefeated season the school
had had in many years.
Bike Racks
Principal A. W. Honeycutt re
quested last Thursday in Student
Council meeting that all high
school students who ride bicycles,
refrain from riding up the private
driveway on the left of the Elemen
tary school. He stated that new
bicycle racks are in the process of
being built in a shed near the home
ec building and in the side yard of
the Cone house, and asked that stu
dents use these rather than the
stands behind the Elementary
school.
