Burlington Tournament To Start Tomorrow Night
Both Boys and Girls
To Begin Play-Offs
The Chapel Hill High School
basketball teams, both boys’ and
girls’, will begin play in the Bur
lington Invitation Basketball
Tournament tomorrow night at
the Fairchild Recreation Center
in Burlington.
Coach Lloyd’s girls will find
their work cut out for them when
they face a strong Gibsonville
girls’ team in the opener at 7.
According to latest reports,
heavy drills have been conducted
during the past week and the
Hillian girls should be in top
condition for the contest.
In the boys’ division, Coach
Bud Stanbach’s cagers shouldn’t
have much trouble disposing of
the Burlington “B” team. Al
though it is not known actually
how Burlington will divide its
two teams, it is thought that
most of the better players will
remain with the “A” string. The
Wildcat “B” team split two
games with the Burlington “B”
team during the regular season.
Should either or both of the
Chapel Hill teams win their first
contests, they will automatically
advance to the finals by virtue
of a semi-final bye. There are

Coffman Sub For Whitehouse
Mr. Selby E. Coffman, Jr., has
been teaching Mrs. Charles
Whitehouse’s science classes
while she has been away. Mr.
Coffman, a graduate student in
the University, has taken Mrs.
Whitehouse’s place for a week
while she has been visiting Mr.
Whitehouse’s and her parents.
Juniors Present
Variety Show
Last Tuesday, the assembly
program was a variety show, pre
sented by the Junior Class, en
titled, “Conezapoppin.”
There were two main parts: a
parody on Frank Sinatra by Bill
Basnight and some of the Junior
girls, and a quiz show, mimick
ing Dr. 1. Q., entitled “Doctor
M. D.” in which David Sharpe
was master of ceremonies.
Throughout the show there
were stunts in the audience, one
of which was the finding of the
script for the show in the bal
cony after which the finder
clambered down a rope from the
balcony to the first floor.
Faculty Members
Receive Degrees
Two Chapel Hill High School
faculty members. Miss Anne
Anderson and Mrs. Helen Macon
received Master of Arts degrees
in education at the conclusion of
the University Winter session.
Miss Anderson was present to
receive her degree at the gradua
tion exercise held in Hill Hall.
Mrs. Macon was unable to attend
the ceremony because of an im
portant meeting.
Comes Here From
Roanoke Rapids
On May 30, 1944, Mr. Honey
cutt notified the school board.
President Graham, and: Dean
House by identical letters to each
that he wished to be replaced at
the end of this school term. He
wrote, “In order that you may
have ample time to secure my
successor, I am notifying yon
that I do not plan to apply for
reappointment at the end of my
present contract on June 30,
1945.”
In compliance with Mr. Honey
cutt’s request the board has se
cured Mr. Charles W. Davis of
Roanoke Rapids to replace him
as school superintendent. Mr.
Davis is a school administrator
of high standing and possesses
valuable qualifications because of
his experience with school-build
ing. This will be a valuable as
set now that the school is about
to begin an important building
program.
Mr. Davis was born in Orange

Alumni Notes
Ned Linker, ’42, in V-12 train
ing at Duke University, was
home last week for Spring vaca
tion.
Proconian Dance Planned
It has been announced by Nita
Sanders, entertainment chairman
of the Proconian, that there will
be a semi-formal dance given by
the Proconian sometime in the
near future. Although no plans
are definite, it is hoped that the
dance can be given at the Country
Club. There will be a special en
tertainment for those who do not
dance, and refreshments. An
nouncements will be made later
concerning the price of tickets
and the time and place.
