Thursday, April 19, 1945 PHOCONIAN Page Three Cat Chatter By Houston Teague The sharp crack of a bat, the ‘‘crowd” roars. The runners are off like rabbits. The ball, hit into deep center hurtled through the air toward third, a perfect throw. As the ball nears the bag, big Leonard Smith, straining every sinew, races toward the base. “Slide, man, Slide!” yells the base coach! Smith with a perplexed look on his face comes panting in standing bolt upright, zo be put out. “Doggonnet, Smith, I told you to slide,” screams the coach in a frenzy. “But Coach, my beautiful new white uniform, it seemed so cruel.” But really it’s a great thrill to come into a base with your shoul ders down and your spikes bared —the only trouble is—oh, well, maybe we did get the heck knocked out of us last game. (He was bigger than I.) Stop us if you’ve heard this one. You have? Well, Miss Manci probably wouldn’t let us print it anyway. Huntley-Shields Fresh Fruits, Vegetables and Meats Senior And Juniors Trample Opponents In Free-Scoring Games Seniors topped Sophomores and Juniors trampled Freshmen in a basketball double - header last week played in the CHHS Tin Can. The Seniors, playing hard racked up 51 points, while the Sophomores pulled up 29 points. Both teams played well, but the favored Seniors emerged victori ous. The Junior-Freshman game was a runaway for the Juniors 45-16. The Freshmen showed up amaz ingly well however, and though outclassed they came through much better than the score indi cates. This was the second of a series of post season games, the first be ing the Junior-Senior boys and girls game the week before. These will be played against other teams, but since no games have been scheduled so far, the remaining girls who come out but didn’t make first team are forming a second team under the guidance of two coeds from the University. Miss Hodges also explained that any person who was on the second team had a chance of making first team during the season. Those making first team were Rena Taylor, Beryl Ward, Mary Helen McFarland, Phillis Fergu son, Clyde Pridgen, Dot Hogan, Madge Crawford, Helen Jane Wettach, Betty Sue Duncan, Christine Cheek, Helen Thompson, and Eva Frances Lloyd.
