Proconian Party To Highlight Festive Day

Wildcats To Meet Hillsboro In District Play-Off
Game To Begin At
Ten In The Morning
The long-awaited return game
between the Chapel Hill and Hills
boro High School baseball teams
will be played this Saturday
morning at Emerson Field and
the contest is scheduled to get un
der way at 10:00 A. M.
Both teams are eagerly await
ing the contest as it will be re
membered that the first game
played in Hillsboro several weeks
ago was declared a tie when
Coach E. A. Brown of Hillsboro
removed his team from the field in
the last of the ninth inning with
the score deadlocked at 8-8.
As to the probable starting
pitchers no announcement has been
made as yet by either coach, but
it is likely that as far as Chapel
Hill is concerned, Coach Bud Stan-
bach will start his ace mounds-
man, Bernard Lloyd.
As previously announced, the
winner of the game will earn the

Tenney Meadow—Everyone brings their own food
and refreshments—Softball and other games to be
played.
8:30 P. M.-11:00 P. M.—PROCONIAN DANCE to be
held at the Episcopal Parish House—Admission:
$.60 per couple; $.75 per stag—Entertainment to be
presented.
Carroll Offered Pro Contract
But Chooses to Stay For a While
There comes a time in every
man’s life when he must decide
between love and money and that
time has come for Preston Car-
roll, star Chapel Hill first base-
man.
The first paragraph may be a
little confusing, but it all boils
down to the fact that said Mr.
Carroll has been offered a juicy
contract with the Raleigh Capitols
of the newly-formed North Caro
lina baseball league and now
must decide whether to join the
Caps or to finish out the season
playing for free for Bud Stan-
bach. Under the existing rules no
one may compete in an amateur
and a professional league at the
same time.
And so said Mr. Carroll must
reach an important decision, one
that might change his entire life.
For the present Pres has decided
that he will remain with the Hil-

Alumni Notes
Andrew Gutierrez was in Chap
el Hill on a 10 day leave. He is
stationed at Camp Howe, Texas
in the Infantry.
Picnic To Be Held
In The Afternoon
The feature event of the festive
week-end, the Proconian dance,
will get under way promptly at
8:30 P. M. Saturday night, it was
announced this week by Proconian
entertainment chairman, Venitah
Sanders.
The event will be the biggest of
the entire school year and a large
turnout is expected. Site of the
dance will be the Episcopal Par
ish House which will be especially
decorated for the occasion.
Highlight of the evening will be
the floor show to be held during
the dance. Features of this show
will be a jam session, a trio, and
a torch song by Hilda (Something

Thomas Takes Over
As Science Teacher
Miss Mary Thomas, former stu
dent teacher from the University,
took over last Friday the post va
cated by Mrs. Bill Whitehouse on
April 13.
Miss Thomas will teach biology,
physics, and social studies. A
major in science at UNC, she
graduated in March, 1945. She
student-taught under Mrs. White-
house, and has been teaching in a
public school in Baltimore since
graduation.
A popular coed at UNC, “Tom
my” was recalled to CHHS by a
telegram from Supt. Honeycutt,
who was frantically trying to find
a substitute for Mrs. Whitehouse.
Mrs. Whitehouse has gone to
Florida with her husband, who
has been reassigned to active duty
in the Army Air Corps.
