Montgomery To Vacate Mitchell Presidency
Mr. John Mont
gomery, president of
Mitchell College for 23
years, has announced his
plan to retire at the close
of the scholastic year
May 31.
In a voice filled with
emotion, the 66-year-old chief
executive made public his
resignation at a called meeting
of the faculty March 12. The
Board of Trustees earlier in the
month had accepted the
resignation with regret and had
charged its executive com
mittee with the task of
nominating a successor.
Receives New Title
Named president emeritus
by the trustees, Mr. Mont
gomery will continue to live in
his home on campus and to
handle business management
duties with the college on a part-
time basis.
In a companion move, the
trustees abolished the office of
bursar, a position now held by
Miss Mary Edna Matheson, and
elected her treasurer of the
Mitchell College corporation, a
post also being released by Mr.
Montgomery.
Miss Matheson, who joined
the Mitchell faculty as a
member of the Business
Education Department in 1956,
has served as bursar since 1962.
Declining to serve on the
committee to locate his
replacement, Mr. Montgomery
told the faculty that the next
president probably would be a
“fund-raiser” who is “younger
than most of you.”
College Math Major
Born Oct. 27, 1903, Mr.
Montgomery is a native of
Sumter, S. C. Majoring in

South Carolina in 1925 and was
awarded the M.A. degree from
the same institution in 1931.

three years, Mr. Montgomery
held the deanship of Lees Junior
College in Jackson, Ky., from
1930 to 1943. He was dean of

in Columbia, Ky., from 1943
until succeeding the late

continued her evangelistic work
that had been interrupted by the
