C., Sunday, January 26, 1947 Number 13 Bishop Waters Opens Nation's Church Unity Octave Observance Washington—Nation-wide observance of the Church Unity Octave was opened Saturday, January 18, at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception at Catholic University with a stirring sermon delivered by the Most Rev. Vincent S. Waters, Bishop of the Diocese of Raleigh. Speaking before a large audience, Bishop Waters told the story of the Good Shepherd as he urged the Catholics of the nation to pray for the return to the fold of non-Catholics. Using as his text a passage from St. John, “Other sheep I have that are not of this fold, and them also must I bring, and they shall hear My voice, and there shall be one fold and one Shep herd,” the Bishop toJd of the early days of Christianity, following the Church through the years. Morals Block the Peace Dorothy Fremont Grant Tells Charlotte Men Charlotte—“Morals block the peace,” Dorothy Fremont Grant, prominent Catholic novelist, told the Catholic Men’s club here at the regular meeting in O’Donoghue School. “Why not try the laws of God?” Mrs. Grant asked. She said that for 400 years men had been mSv ing away from the laws of God toward the laws of man and that the result had been disaster. “The Atlantic Charter was im perfect,” she said, “But today na tions are not even abiding by this.” She said that there was no peace in the world and that there could be none until the world came again to Christianity. The eRv. Albert Bau wert, S. S. J., son of a miner him self, has obtained permission from his superiors to live with the mi ners and to work alongsde them at their jobs. Father Albert, known to his fellow workers as “the Flemish father,” occupies a small room at the canteen of the Hautrage mine. Taylor Mission Stamped By Charity and Peace Rome Daily Paper Says Rome.— (NC)—The lofty ideals of peace and charity'prompted the recent visit of Myron C. Taylor, personal representative of Presi dent Harry S. Truman at the Holy See, to the Eternal City, it has been noted in an article in II Quo tidiano, Rome daily newspaper. Roosevelt, stemmed (Continued on Page 12) Cardinal from Quebec Dies Unexpectedly In Los Angeles Los Angeles.—(NC)—Victim of a heart attack, His Eminence Rod rigue Cardinal Villaneuve, O. M. I., 63-year-old Archbishop of Quebec, died at Ramona Acade my in neighboring Alhambra. Although the Cardinal had been ill for several months and arrived here just four days ago from New York for a period of recuperation and rest, his death was sudden and came as a profound shock. Cardinal Villeneuve appeared to be in fair health after he arose and moved about the academy. He (Continued on Page 12) New Bern Parish Gives Silver Jubilee Program For Father Julian New Bern—Students of St. Jo seph’s school honored Father Jul ian Endler, C. P., at a Silver Jubilee celebration held at Eagan Hall Friday, January 17. A welcome address and presen tation of a gift from the children was made by Della Carter. The address was followed by an enter tainment presented by the grade school children. Philip Dove presented a gift and greetings from the parishoners. A one act play was then presented by the high school students. Those in the cast included Car rie Jones, Alice Hukens, Charles English, Ernestine Wynn, Charles Harris, Willa Mae Wynn, Jessa dine Oden and Dorothy Smith. Now in its 41st year of publication, the annual contains within its 816 pages a wealth of (Continued on Page 6) Free Army Bibles Are Now Gone WASHINGTON —(NC)— More than 6,000 letters have been re ceived at the office of the Army Chief of Chaplains in response to an announcement that a number of surplus Scriptures were available for free distribution. Only about one-sixth of the requests can be filled, and the Chief of Chaplains says, no more letters, please. Rt. Rev. Msgr. Fulton J. Sheen (left), of Catholic University, who on Sunday, January 26 (6 P. M. EST) inaugurates a series of ad dresses on the Catholic Hour, nationwide network program pro duced by the National Council of Catholic Men, in cooperation with the National Broadcasting Company. “Light Your Lamps” is the general title of Monsignor Sheen’s talks. On the Hour of Faith, na tionwide program, beginning February 2, the Rev. Thomas E. Radio Play Dramatizes Father Paul's Life Sunday, January 26 Garrison, N. Y.—(NC>—The life story of Father Paul James Fran cis, S. A., founder of the Frisciscan Friars of the Atonement and also the founder of the Church Unity Octave movement, will be dra matized on Sunday, January 26, on the Ave Maria Hour radio pro gram.
