C.; Vernon Bowers, Richmond, Va. _ Catholic Daughters Get Large New Class At Raleigh Cathedral RALEIGH—Following the beau tiful and impressive ritual of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court Bishop Hafey, No. 1088, in itiated the largest group of mem bers in its history on Sunday af ternoon, ApriF^O, in the auditor ium of the Sacred Heart Cathed ral School. The new members included Mesdames Paul B. Griffin, Jr., H. D. Sanford, Larry W. Hays, David Meyers, Daniel Brady, Lucille Poole, R. Jr Roy, C. F. Garges, Joseph D. Devine, James H. Higgs, Ernest Edelen, T. P. Maus, John S. Keen, Charles Powers, Frank Jones, Mary Frances Tomb, Win nie Nemmers, all of Raleigh, and Miss Kathryn A. McMahon and Mrs. Sarah J. Lorenson of South ern Pines. Mrs. John W. Kane, Grand Re gent of Court Bishop Hafey, pre sided over the initiation ceremon ies. Immediately following Benedic tion in Sacred Heart Cathedral, a reception was held in the club room of the Sacred Heart Cathed ral School. The purple and gold colors of the Catholic Daughters of America were used in arrange ments of large crystal bowls of flowers for the table decorations, burning candles and place cards. Ice cream, home made cakes, mints nuts and hot coffee were served to approximately sixty-five members of Court Bishop Hafey, members of the clergy, and out-of-town guests. _ The reception committee includ ed Mesdames Lillian Streb, C. J. Emnet, L. C. Murchison, J. J. Fal lon, B>A. Dubois, P. B. Edelen and Peter Ellison. Interesting talks were made by Monsignor J. Lennox Federal and the Reverend Father Charles J. O’Connor of the Sacred Heart Ca thedral, and Miss Elizabeth Bul iard, Territorial Deputy of the Ca tholic Daughters of America, of Wilmington. Other guests included the Rev erend Father John S. Regan, As sistant Superintendent of Catholic Orphanage at Nazareth, Mrs. J. William Brown, and Misses Nell and Mary Sheehan of Wilmington. Monsignor J. Lennox Federal paid especial tribute to Mrs. James P. Mallette, Monitor of Court Bish op Hafey, who was responsible for the majority of the new members. The rostrum of the auditorium was converted into a beautiful al ■tar to our Blessed Lady. A pro fusion of white spirea, dogwood blossoms, white and purple lilac, purple wisteria, and six seven branched candelabra holdings burning what candles were used. —Orah M. Russell. Wilson Altar Society Entertains Men's Group WILSON — The ladies of St. Therese Altar Society entertained the gentlemen of the parish at a delicious supper in the convent hall Sunday. The Rev. Father Ar thur Racette asked the blessing. After supper a social meeting was held, pneparing to organize a' Ca tholic men’s club of the parish. A formal meeting will be held la May, aV which time officers will be elected. Mrs. M. J. Bird, Mrs. Mitchell B. Farris and Mrs. Leslie Farris were hostesses for the evening. There were about thirty present for the delightful affair. NCCLA Gives Library To Charlotte Hospital For Mercy Patients CHARLOTTE — A donation of books was presented to the Mercy Hospital Rolling Library by the NCCLA. The rolling library will be conducted by the members of the Mercy Hospital Guild. A group of children’s books was presented to the children’s ward. In addition to the books, a num ber of magazines and other book lets were given. The books included novels, such as “The Firebrand of the Indies,” by Seth-Smith, about St. Francis Xavier, “The Candlestick Makers,” by Lucille Borden, and others. Spi ritual and biographical books were “Gay Legends of the Saints,” by Fox, “Life of Christ,” by O’Brien, “Radiating Christ,” by Raoul Plus, S.J., “The Rainbow of Sorrow.” by Fulton J. Sheen, “Peace” by Father Lasance, “From Doubt to Faith,” by - Father Tournebize, “The Hound of Heaven” by Fran cis Thompson, “The Missions in War and Peace” by Bishop Cush ing, and a number of others. The rolling library conducted by the Guild was discontinued during the war, and will be resumed in the near future. Other donations of books of all types will be grate fully received by the Guild.
