Thomas Murray To Receive Gibbons Medal . Washington, D.C. — Thomas E. Murray, former member of the Atomic Energy Commission, has been selected to receive the Card inal Gibbons Medal, highest honor of the Alumni Association of The Catholic University of America. He announcement was made by John L. Schroeder, national presi dent of the Association. Presenta tion will be made on November 15 it the annual. banquet climaxing homecoming activities. ' in 1954, Catholic University be stowed upon Mr. Murray ah honor ary degree with the citation read ing, in part: “The Catholic Univer sity of America with deep appre ciation of the incalculable services which the Honorable Thomas Ed ward Murray, distinguished en gineer and outstanding Catholic layman; is rendering to our coun try, takes pleasure in conferring upon him the degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa.” Mr. Mur ray has been similarly honored by other universities and colleges. He is holder of Notre Dame's Laetare Medal, the 1956 Catholic Peace Award, the Catholic Action Medal of St. Bonaventure Univer sity, the Catholic Youth Organiza tion and Christopher Awards and the Engineer of the Year Medal from Yale University. He also re ceived a special award from the United States Government as in ventor of a method of manufactur ing shells during World War II, one of his more than 200 patented Inventions. ■ Bom in Albany, New York in 1891, Mr. Murray received his; early education in Catholic schools of New York. The speaker, Dr. Franklin Dun ham, chief of radio-television for the U.S. Office of Education, Washington, D.C., added, however, that religion, on the whole, has “used television very well.” In evaluating the relative im portance of religious television Murray Manufacturing Corpora tion, which he had organized, when President Truman appointed him a member of the Atomic Energy Commission in 1950. He served on the Commission until July 1, 1957 and since that time has been a consultant to the Joint Congressional Atomic Energy Com mittee. He has served on the boards of many corporations as well as char itable and educational institutions. He helped to organize The United Mine Workers Welfare and Retire ment Fund and was its first chair man. He also was a trustee of the Philip Murray Foundation. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, and holds a professional engineer’s license. C. programming, Dr. Dunham said that the medium must do some thing more than mirror commun ity life. “If it only reflects that life,” he declared, "it is nothing. If it betters it, it is a God-send.” Dr. Durham hit out strongly against "get-rich-quick quiz pro grams” which, he said, “bring strong batteries of brash material ism to attack our concept of Chris tian education.” He said that, in his opinion, such programs do "far more harm than television does by glorifying so-called beauty con tests.” Dr. Dunham is among 26 lay and clerical authorities from throughout the United States and Canada who this week are address ing the annual gathering of bish ops, priests, sisters, laymen and laywomen on a wide variety of topics relating to the Catholic Church. The program, which ends Saturday, is presided over by the Most Rev. Vincent S. Waters, D. D„ bishop of Raleigh. In another address, the Rev. John C. Schultz of Holy Cross Col lege, Washington, D.C., scored the idea that “monasteries and con vents have a corner on the mar ket of mental prayer." Father Schultz said the concept of mental prayer is erroneously understood to be something “com plex, remote from the laity.” On the contrary, he said, it amounts to “simply thinking about God.” Other speakers Wednesday were the Very Rev. John J. Dougherty of Immaculate Conception Semi nary, Darlington, N.J., whose topic Was “The Bible in Contemporary Catholic Thought”; the Rev. Wil liam G. Most of Doras College, Du buque, Iowa, who spoke on “Mary in Our Life,” and the Rev. Robert E. Sheridan, Maryknoll priest from Boston, Mass., who spoke on the life of the late Rev.
