programming, Dr. Dunham said
that the medium must do some
thing more than mirror commun
ity life.
“If it only reflects that life,”
he declared, "it is nothing. If it
betters it, it is a God-send.”
Dr. Durham hit out strongly
against "get-rich-quick quiz pro
grams” which, he said, “bring
strong batteries of brash material
ism to attack our concept of Chris
tian education.” He said that, in
his opinion, such programs do "far
more harm than television does by
glorifying so-called beauty con
tests.”
Dr. Dunham is among 26 lay
and clerical authorities from
throughout the United States and
Canada who this week are address
ing the annual gathering of bish
ops, priests, sisters, laymen and
laywomen on a wide variety of
topics relating to the Catholic
Church. The program, which ends
Saturday, is presided over by the
Most Rev. Vincent S. Waters, D.
D„ bishop of Raleigh.
In another address, the Rev.
John C. Schultz of Holy Cross Col
lege, Washington, D.C., scored the
idea that “monasteries and con
vents have a corner on the mar
ket of mental prayer."
Father Schultz said the concept
of mental prayer is erroneously
understood to be something “com
plex, remote from the laity.” On
the contrary, he said, it amounts
to “simply thinking about God.”
Other speakers Wednesday were
the Very Rev. John J. Dougherty
of Immaculate Conception Semi
nary, Darlington, N.J., whose topic
Was “The Bible in Contemporary
Catholic Thought”; the Rev. Wil
liam G. Most of Doras College, Du
buque, Iowa, who spoke on “Mary
in Our Life,” and the Rev. Robert
E. Sheridan, Maryknoll priest
from Boston, Mass., who spoke on
the life of the late Rev. Thomas
Price, a co-founder of the Mary
knoll Fathers.
