Where 'One' Covers Ground For Three' - By Frederick Koch “Keeping the home fires burning” is often too big a job- for at few devoted Catholics in regard to the maintenance of an at tending priest and the chapel, which to them is their parish Church. The dozen or more envelopes which regularly find their Way into the Sunday offertory basket cannot be any stretching ilUHgUUlUUU U1CCI the ordinary expenses of the chap 41, much less major repairs. Priests and people of our mis areas are aware that the nent residence of a parish in any community is the st solid step toward progress the life of a congregation. Fac ag reality, however, we are years Sead -of ourselves in this high ibition. The four congregations of Cath olics who look to the priests as nigned to the Apostolate Mission ’enter at Newton Grove for pas oral administrations, give mater ! al help as best they are able. Yet each month, the mission finances fun into a deficit that fluctuates toith the crop season, the weath er with its fuel bills, and the oc casional demands of heavy re pairs to car or buildings. The mission chapel with its "open door" looks to the monthly assistance of the Diocesan Devel opment Fund to meet the strug gle toward progress in the rural and racial neighborhoods where the true Faith still needs an ag gressive program to make the spadework of “better known and understood” possible. Through the Diocesan Develop ment Fund the pastoral training program of the newly-ordained priest of the Diocese of Raleigh: is made a permanent and de pendable service to the good of the Holy Church. The alphabet soup combinations of letters began with the “NRA” during the depression days. Since then all kinds of government, wel fare, educational as well as re ligious agencies have used the code. “DDF" is comparatively new in the life of Tar Heel Catholics. Catholic Alumni Hosts India Youth Leaders Washington — — Mem bers of a delegation of Indian youth leaders were guests at a re ception sponsored by the Catholic College Alumni Club during a visit to Washington. The reception for the youth leaders was held at the headquar ters building of the National Cath olic Welfare Conference. Attend ing were members of various U.S. youth organizations. This administrative headquar ters is a specific fulfillment of Christ’s “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Propaganda Fide, as it is usu ally called, is the only one of the 12 Roman congregations set up to put itself out of business. This liquidating process is well illus trated by the growth and devel opment of the Church la the United Statu, In the 1600s the congregation had jurisdiction over the mission ary activities of the English in Maryland and the East, of the French in the Middle West and of the Spanish in the Southwest and California. Shortly after the U. S. became a nation, the congregation estab lished the American hierarchy. This major development in the mission country took place in 1788. But it was not until 1908, only 80 years ago, that the Church in the U. S. was deemed .to have passed through its for mative period and to be stable enough to be independent of the mission congregation.
