MARYKNOLLER — In the manner of the Mary knoll Mis
sioners Fr. Edward J. Halloran has been far places. Now
he is in Charlotte, chaplain of Mercy Hospital. His appoint
ment last August was the latest in a series beginning 30 years
ago with ordination at Mary knoll Seminary, N.Y. It was 1927
and he left the same year for Korea where he remained until
1935. There followed 18 years in Hawaii before returning to
his native Buffalo. Two years later he was transferred to
Kingston, N.C., thence to Jacksonville until 1959 — a full
fledged Buffalo Tar Heel. (NCC Photo—W. Forres Stewart)
The Third
Dimension
of the
News
The third dimension of the News
is the depth and fullness this news*
paper adds to the daily and weekly
news of the world— judging the
week's events against the eternal
(ruths of the Catholic faith.
| Your daily newspapers present
news with one face-a bare, often
unexplained facade of facts and
figures-usually relieved only by se
cularized opinions and gossipy fea
tures.
Weekly newsmagazines give some
height and width to the world’s news
—adding more information to the
daily development of the news, giv
ing some coloration to the world's
weekly history.
I But only your Catholic newspaper
—(Am newspaper and 119 others like
it across the U.S.A. and Canada
give fullness, richness and depth to
(he weekly history of the world—
casting the news of the week against
(he true history of the world and the
Church.

Native Bishop
Pleads Charity
In Race Issue
LEOPOLDVILLE, Belgian Con
go, —(NC)— The recent violence
in the Congo is a warning that in
depence will prove a “national
catastrophe” unless the people ac
cept the “universal charity which
Christ has come to place in us,”
Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Malula
of Leopoldville has asserted.
The popular native pastor, who
was elevated to the episcopate last
summer, spoke over Radio Leo
poldville. Expressing the hope
that “the days of 1960 will be truly
peaceful,” he said:
“On the one hand, all Congolese
are looking to the future with the
hope of becoming free men who
will on their own carry out the
business of their country. On the
other hand, at the very dawn of
that independence, the cruel real
ity of distressing spectacles is
spreading itself before our eyes.
Arson, ruin and mourning are
spreading panic, fear, mistrust and
insecurity all over. Our Congo
lese society is poisoned by racial
hatred, tribal division and fratri
cidal battles.”
Asserting that 1960 will prove
a “decisive year” for the young
Congolese state, Bishop Malula
said:
“It will be good, if at its very
beginning, all of us make up our
minds to love one another again.
Our young Congolese state, if it
wishes to progress in prosperity
and in the welfare of all, must
have within itself a principle of
cohesion that will generate order
and peace.”
Biblical Notes
On Catholic TV
NEW YORK —(NC)— The na
ture of Biblical writing and its va
rious literary forms will be ex
plored in the second program of
this month’s televised “Catholic
Hour,” January 17.
The radio and television office
of the National Council of Cath
olic Men, which produces the pro
gram in cooperation with the NB
C-TV network, said the program
will be broadcast from 1:30 to 2
p.m., EST.
Msgr. John J. Dougherty, presi
dent of Seton Hall University,
South Orange, N.J., and host for
the series, will stress the need for
distinguishing between the use of
fable and the reporting of actual
events for accurate reading of
the Bible.
