HfiveStitiire Rites Held ■At Belmont Motherhouse By Sister Mary Joan BELMONT — Most Rev. Vincent |s. Waters, D.D., Bishop of Raleigh, I officiated at the ceremonies of Pro Ifession and Reception at Sacred Heart Convent in Belmont on Au | gust 15 and 16. “There is no one who has left Souse, or brothers, or sisters or I mother or father ... for my sake “quoted Bishop Waters,” who shall not receive now in the present time a hundredfold as much . . . and in the age to come life ever lasting.” (Mark 10,29,30) Testifying to their faith that the real goal of the human heart is God Whose [ love is eternal, a number of young romen from various parts of the f globe dedicated themselves to Bishop Calls Continued from page 1A ownership of property must be preserved to maintain human dig ^ty, it must also be controlled so that more than a privileged few can enjoy its benefits. The Archbishop pointed out that in Puno, the nation’s poorest department and its most heavily populated outside of Lima, the capital, only half of one per cent of the people are property owners. The rest, he said, work Qn the lands of the rich for starvation wages. Archbishop Rodriguez suggested three ways to remedy this situation: — Revision of laws governing the use of private property to make them serve the common good. — Payment by landowners and businesses of a just family wage to enable workers to save money and eventually become property owners themselves. ^— Giving people a true Chris tian attitude toward the acquisition and use of private property. The present lack of such an attitude among Peruvians, 95 per cent of whom are Catholics, is due in part to the shortage of priests, he said. It is also due, he added, to the failure to teach the social doctrines of the Church in the nation’s schools and in sermons. Archbishop Rodriguez also ad vocated: — Nationalization of big busi nesses with too much economic and political power for the common good. — Encouragement and protec tion of production cooperatives. — Higher inheritance taxes. — Business reform to coordinate production in the interest of the common good. — Expropriation and redistri bution of private property for the common good. r 1 SHADOW LAWN MOTOR COURT RALEIGH, N. Primitive Art Work of Priest1 Comes to Light LIVERMORE FALLS, Me., — (NC) — Two art collections here have acquired virtually the entire painting output of a French priest artist who died 31 years ago. Arnold H. Sturtevant and Dr. Ed ward Martin of Livermore Falls purchased some 500 paintings by Father Jean Louis Gervat, who for many years combined art with his duties as a parish priest in south ern France. The two collectors acquired Fa ther Gervat’s paintings almost by accident. Some months ago they noticed an article in a French journal on the priest’s work. They were interested in him because he was a primative, or self-taught artist, and they have specialized in collecting American primative paintings. The wrote to the priest’s sister, expressing an interest in his work and asking if any of his paintings were for sale. She replied that they could have them all, since it has been her brother’s wish that his work be seen by North Americans. Father Gervat, who died in 1930 at the age of 63, specialized in landscapes depicting the southern France he knew so well.
