FREQUENT COMMUNICANTS ARE
CALLED 'EVERY-DAY SAINTS'
Vancouver, B. C. — (NC) — Catholics who frequently receive
Holy Communion are the “every-day saints of this Second Vatican
Council year,” Archbishop W. M. Duke of Vancouver said here.
He spoke in French at the closing exercise of three days of
prayer in Blessed Sacrament church marking the canonization of
St. Peter Julien Eymard, founder of the Blessed Sacrament Fathers
and a promoter of devotion to the Eucharist.
“There are 930,000 Religious in the world who receive Com
munion practically every day,” the Archbishop said.
“Added to this must be the Catholic people and the children
of all the parishes and missions of the world who come to Com
munion practically every day,” the Archbishop said.

Love joy Stresses
The Challenge of
'Poverty Pockets'
CHARLOTTE — Tuesday morn
ing, February 19th, the students of
Charlotte Catholic High School
were challenged to a brotherhood
of action and concern. The chal
lenge was presented by Dr. Gordon
Lovejoy, director of the National
Conference of Christians and Jews
in the Carolinas and Tennessee. The
speech was given in connection
with the National Brotherhood
Week.
Dr. Lovejoy, who holds a Ph.D.
in Sociology from the University
of North Carolina, told the stu
dents of the problems of prejudice
and poverty facing American
youth. In particular, he related that
there are more than 1,400 loca
tions in America, which Dr. Love
joy calls “poverty pockets,” where
people are fed on welfare surplus
alone. He also stated that the ma
jority of the poverty-stricken
Americans are members of minor
ity groups.
Mentioning the recent National
Conference of Christians and Jews
meeting in Chicago, Dr. Lovejoy re
called one of the greatest prob
lems facing modern-day America
— apathy. He said that too many
young people are concerned with
the fringe benefits of jobs instead
of the stimulus and challenge af
forded by them. In closing, Dr.
Lovejoy expressed the hope that
brotherhood be practiced, not
just during National Brother
hood Week, but every week of the
year.

speech, obscenity and censorship
has reopened longstanding ques
tions about its attitude on these
explosive issues.
The court on February 18 ruled
that the Rhode Island Commission
to Encourage Morality in Youth
acted unconstitutionally in sending
book and magazine distributors
lists of “objectionable” publica
tions and intimating it would rec
ommend prosecution of non-co
operators. In the wake of this ac
tion, many people have asked
themselves such perennial ques
tions as these:
Has the court really made it all
but impossible- for government
agencies to control smutty mate
rial?
Do the nine justices of the na
tion’s highest tribunal really fail
to see what to other thoughtful
citizens seems inescapably clear—
that obscene literature and films
are a growing U.S. social problem
which particularly menaces Ameri
can youth?
A REVIEW of the court’s de
cisions in this field over the last
few years makes it apparent that
the answer is a qualified no.
The court has indeed hedged ef

forts to bar obscenity with a num
ber of limitations designed to pre
vent infringement on free speech.
In doing so, it has undoubtedly,
made the work of those who seek
to combat indecent matter harder.
At the same time the court has
made it clear that it is not insensi
tive to legitimate concern over the .
obscenity problem and that it is
willing to sustain efforts to crack
down on indecent material, so long
as these efforts contain adequate
safeguards for constitutionally pro
tected material.
The court’s Rhode Island deci
sion is only one of a series which
in recent years have formed a sig
nificant new body of legal doctrine
in this controversial area. Among
the major cases are the following:
—Roth v. United States and Al
berts v. California. In these two
landmark cases of 1957, two men
convicted of distributing obscene
literature argued that the First
Amendment was violated by re
straints On the distribution of any
type of literature, even obscenity.
THE SUPREME COURT’S opin-,
ion, written by Justice Brennan,
dismissed this argument and held
that obscene literature does not
come under the Constitution’s free
speech and free press guarantees.
The opinion also established a
new legal test of obscenity;
“whether to the average person
applying community standards, the
dominant theme of the material'
taken as a whole appeals to pru
rient interest.”
—Kingsley Books v. Brown. De
cided in 1957 along with Roth-Al
berts, this case saw the court up
