editorials What's with the Sixth? Can you see any point in celebrating the Fourth of July on the sixth? Neither can we. What possessed so many Tarheels to conduct busi ness as usual on the Nation’s Birthday, and give their employees the following Monday off? The love of money, wouldn’t you say? More folks will' buy more things on Saturday than on any Monday. This willingness to let the pursuit of sales control all things — the calendar not excluded — is the most crass form of materialism. It respects neither patriotism, nor religion, nor anything else but the bank statement It cares just about as little for a NATIONAL holiday as'it does for the day of rest, and most of us are fools enough to go along with it. From our treasure we will not be parted! Crazy with, the Heat When (white) folks spend a day at the shore, they splash about in the water for perhaps half an hour, and then devote the remaining hours to stretching out on the sand in hopes of obtaining a deep, dark tan. The re cent scenes in Florida — whites battling to keep some of their fellow citizens off the beach because their skin was too dark — must rank among the most ludicrous events of the year. Even the superior intellects of their guardian angels must have been hard pressed to find hide or hair of reason in the farce. ****** Debt Valley Glenn L. Archer, the man who is wasting his life trying to destroy the influence of the Catholic Church, is upset this summer. As director of “Protestants and Other Americans United for the Separation of Church and State”, he sends out regular bulletins from his Wash ington office. His latest communique contains the follow ing lament: “Over at the National Catholic Welfare Conference, just three blocks from here (POAU headquarters), summer seems to make little difference. They switch on the air conditioning and continue their all-year assault on the constitutional principle of Church-State separa tion.” He claims that “their huge national propaganda ma chine will operate at full speed, summer or not!” This is quite different from the picture Archer gives of POAU where “just when we get our sleeves rolled up to hit the next problem with a POW! — our incoire Sometimes goes poof . . . down into Debt Valley.” It may just be that Americans are no longer going to buy Mr. Archer’s distorted caricature of the Church as a monolithic society bent on destroying the First Amendment to the Constitution. The stands against the school-prayer amendment taken recently by the Catholic Press Association and by numerous Catholic Bishops and spokesmen seems to have left Mr. Archer fresh out of a cause. Having done nothing but criticize the Church for so many years, he has lost the power of positive thinking. With no program of value to offer his readership, time may be running out for Mr. Archer. He may be faced with a long string of Debt Valley days. need a vacation! THE was ' N.C.C. MAILBAG NORTH CAROLINA very prominently pic To the Editor: In last weeks issue of CATHOLIC a Nun’s pictur tured. I am a convert and of course am not familiar with all the tenets of the various societies, but to me that picture was entirely out of line with my concept of a religious. We, as a minority, should be very careful on the appearance and good taste of a newspaper going into so many homes in various communities and states. So, in the future please hold down anything that would tend to cause a reflection on our holy Catholic Church. Should the same trend continue I will have to ask you to discontinue my paper. e S N Hertford, N. C. Cur’s Note: Yep, “we” Epistle: If you live a life of nature . . Chariot . . . You arc marked out for Death THE RED LINE CUBA, SI! ROME, 7VO/ It is only a matter of time until Castro sets up a schismatic “national church,” according to Father Emiliano Guezuraga, one of many Catholic priests expell ed from Communist Cuba. Communist agents in South America are busy planning for that day. When and if it comes, the Reds hope to have sufficient ly infiltrated Catholic circles in all other Latin American coun tries so that a massive number of Catholics will break with the Roman Church and pledge ab solute allegiance to “Catholic Castroism.” The cry will be: “Cuba, Si! Rome, No!” If the Reds believe religion to be the opium of the people, why do they work to establish a new church in South America rather than wage open war on the estab lished Church? The answer has been uncover ed by the Vatican newspaper, L’OSSERVATORE ROMANO, in an amazing document — a Span ish language pamphlet prepared in Communist China and distribut ed in Cuba and Latin America— which warns the Communists not to misjudge the power and at traction of the Church. Instead, it proposes establishment of schismatic national Churches “as an ideal way of destroying reli gion.” But why is Cuba the place to start a schismatic church? For one thing, Communism is already established in that beleaguered little island. Castro has national ized the Catholic schools, taken over convents and monasteries, and deported anti-Communist clergy and religious. All that re mains is the day the Red dicta tor will choose to name a Cuban Pope who will appoint hierarchy loyal to the Communist govern ment. Before this can be done, how ever, the Catholic population of Cuba’s southern sister states must be readied to accept “Catholic Castroism” as the true faith of the masses. In Chile, for example, the Reds are holding up Cast roism and Catholicism to the masses as roses from the same stem. Catholic Communist prop aganda is being pounded into the people daily. The March issue of WORLD MARXIST REVIEW, the official Moscow publication which directs Communist action all over the world, says this to the people of Chile: “In Chilean history a place of honor is occupied hy tne monks . . . who at the beginning of the last century fought with courage and resolution against reaction. And it is by no means excluded that in the new conditions the example of the Cuban priest who during the Batista regime with drew to the mountains to join the struggle under Fidel Castro’s command may be repeated in Latin America.” One such famous priest the Reds have “canonized” as a mod ern day saint is young Father Angel Maria Rivas, an idealistic liberal who was constant advisor and contact to. rebel chiefs on the Second Front in Oriente Pro Mailbag To the Editor: Have you ever thought of giving a discount sub scription to senior citizens? Although I am not in dire circumstances I find that as everything is rising in cost one must do without certain enjoyments. We have taken your pa per since coming to Char lotte ten years ago. Now that it isn’t coming I am missing it as I greatly en joyed it. (Name withheld) Editor’s Note: Would any reader like to come to the aid of this party? rei< Vince during xne uasiro revolu tion. It was Father Rivas who came down from the Sierra Maes tra hills to proclaim to the Cuban people: “If this is Communism, then Christ was a Communist.” As it turned out, it was Com munism and the Communists have pictured Christ to the South Americans not as the Son of God, but as a Communist. In the May issue of POLITI CAL AFFAIRS, another official Communist publication, we can see a typical example of how the Reds lure South American Catholics with propaganda that seems to indicate Communists and Catholics should work to gether. The Reds quote from The Book of Acts: . . and all that believed were together and had all things in common, and parted them to all men, as every man had need . . .” POLITICAL AFFAIRS con cludes: “These are indeed human istic concepts that should make -it easier for us to see eye to eye and work together in joint efforts for the betterment of man kind.” Now the Cuban people can see how they were misled, how the Communists used them to gain power and then, once in posses sion of power, how they proceed ed with haste and vengeance to destroy the Catholic Church. Cath olics in Communist Cuba beg their fellow Catholics in South America to heed the message of their own blindness.
