ONCE Over The Diocese Junior Daughters Meet in Greensboro GREENSBORO — Junior Cath olic Daughters from Fayetteville, New Bern and Durham attended their first biennial State conven tion at Notre Dame High School here. Mrs. Margaret Allen, State junior chairman, presided. Father Robert Shea, State chaplain, opened the convention with Mass followed by the dedication and Ceremony of the Roses. Mrs. Annie Shields, State Grand Regent, welcomed the girls on be half of the Senior Catholic Daugh ters of North Carolina. Keynote speaker was Miss Joan Roberts, executive secretary of Junior Catholic Daughters, who brought greetings from the national office in Washington. State officers elected were Gale Van Pelt, president, Maria Goretta Court, Durham; Anne Simoneau, vice president, St. Patrick’s Court, Fayetteville; Mary Ellen Van Haut, secretary, St. Patrick’s Court; Mar gherita De Rosa, treasurer, Court Msgr. M. A. Irwin, New Bern, and Nancy Armstrong, reporter, Court Msgr. M. A. Irwin. Delegates for the national con vention in Chicago in August will be Gale Van Pelt and Anne Simon eau. Alternates will be Mary Ellen Van Haut and Nancy Armstrong. Mrs. Allen installed the officers and Miss Van Pelt was awarded the prize as the State’s 1965 Outstand ing Junior. Court Greensboro 1200 enter tained the group after the conven tion and Bishop Charles McLaugh lin spoke briefly at the meeting. John E. McCarthy told a sub committee of the House Judiciary Committee that present laws espouse racial policies which, if applied in this country, “might well be held unconstitutional.” “An effective means should be found for issuing entrance docu ments to our country without re gard to the ethnic origin, nation ality or race of those wishing to join this democratic brotherhood,” McCarthy told the Immigration and Nationality Subcommittee. He was accompanied by Edmund Cum mings, associate director of the NCWC department. The subcommittee is consideru| a proposal by President Johns to replace the national origins i tern of allotting immigration qu tas.
