Immigration Law Study BacketI
WASHINGTON — (NC) — The
director of the Immigration De
partment of the National Catholic
Welfare Conference strongly sup
ported Congressional re-study of
U.S. immigration laws.
John E. McCarthy told a sub
committee of the House Judiciary
Committee that present laws
espouse racial policies which, if
applied in this country, “might
well be held unconstitutional.”
“An effective means should be
found for issuing entrance docu
ments to our country without re
gard to the ethnic origin, nation
ality or race of those wishing to
join this democratic brotherhood,”
McCarthy told the Immigration and
Nationality Subcommittee. He was
accompanied by Edmund Cum
mings, associate director of the
NCWC department.
The subcommittee is consideru|
a proposal by President Johns
to replace the national origins i
tern of allotting immigration qu
tas. This bases each foreign n»|
tion’s quota on the nation origins
of U.S. citizens in 1920.
