Downey Sr. will attend the Na val Academy at Annapolis next year. Jerry received his appointment through North Carolina Congress man Charles Raper Jonas. Jerry was active in athletics at Catholic High School, football and golf, but he has no definite plans for the future. He was also the president of the Math and Science Club, Vice President of his home room, and secertary of the Civics club. He chose the Naval Academy over the Citadel and Virginia Military Institute. One of the highlights of the graduation convocation will be the conferring of the honorary degree Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) on the Rt. Rev. Edward T. Gilbert, dioc esan superintendent of schools and pastor of St. Bernadette’s Church in Goldsboro. Gen. Mark W. Clark, retiring president of The Citadel and re nowned Army commander-in-chief and American commissioner in Germany, and later the hero of the Korean War, will deliver the commencement address at the aca demic convocation. THE CALENDAR of exercises begins with the senior class party at the Gastonia Country Club on Sunday evening. May 30. The grad uation ceremonies have been sim plified for convenience of parents and streamlined for concentration and timing, and will take place on June 1. On Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. the aca demic procession of graduates and faculty and guests in colorful academic robes will form and pro ceed to the Abbey Cathedral for Mass of thanksgiving. The Most Rev. Ernest L. Unterkoefler, Bish op of Charleston, S. C., will delver the baccalaureate sermon. The religious exercises will be followed by a buffet supper for the graduates, their parents, and the faculty at 5:30 p.m. At 7:15 the academic procession will again form and the graduates will be granted their academic hoods on the front lawn, and, after the flag lowering ceremony, the pro cession will go to the Haid Gym nasium for the convocation. BESIDES GENERAL Clark and Monsignor Gilbert, two other prom inent North Carolinians will re ceive honorary degrees, Charles D. Gray, Sr. of Gastonia, and Gilbert S. Shaw of Charlotte. Vin cent S. Waters, Bishop of Raleigh, will say Mass for the graduates of Sacred Heart College and Sacred Heart Academy in the Cardinal Gibbons Memorial Chapel at Sa cred Heart.
