Our Lady of Mercy High School Scholarships Awarded At Graduation Exercises Twenty-seven seniors from Our Lady of Mercy High School re ceived diplomas at St. Patrick’s Church during the graduation ex ercises on Thursday evening, June 3, 1965. The Most Reverend Charles B. McLaughlin, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Raleigh presided over the fourth annual commencement program. Rev erend Clement Porzio, O.S.B., Pro fessor of Education at Belmont Abbey College, was Master of Ceremonies. Following the presen tation of diplomas to the grad uates, the following recipients of scholarships were recognized: Miss Helen Patricia Kearney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Kearney, 834 Fairbanks Road, re ceived a tuition scholarship and a music grant from Queens College, Charlotte, N. C. Miss Kearney plans to major in music at the college level. She is a member of St. Ann’s Parish. MISS MARY JO MOSCA re ceived the Mother Theresa Sulli van Scholarship, given each year to a student from Our Lady of Poetry Award Made At C.D.A. Meeting A special feature of the final 1964-65 meeting of the Charlotte Court of the Catholic Daughters of America was the presentation of a poetry award to Miss Patti Eic horn. Mrs. James T. Crawford, act ing Grand Regent made the award which Miss Eichorn, a member of St. Gabriel’s Parish, won in the national poetry contest sponsored by the Catholic Daughters. The following members of Court No. 1199 were installed by Mrs. Marie Arbor, State Vice Regent: Mrs. Martha Fuhrer, Grand Re gent; Mrs. Barbara Crawford, Vice Grand Regent; Mrs. Kathleen Car ney, Historian; Mrs. Bernetice Bucher, Lecturer; Mrs. Cathleen Crenshaw, Prophetess; Mrs. Lor etta Lowrey, Financial Secretary; Mrs. Marie Maher, Sentinel; Mrs. Jane Powell, Treasurer; Mrs. Vir ginia Wells, Monitor; Mrs. Elena Forman, Organist; and Father D. Edward Sullivan, Chaplain. Among the Court’s projects in the year now ending have been luncheons, days of recollection, fund raising for the diocesan sem inarians, and book reviews at the monthly meetings. A covered dish supper followed the installation of new officers at the final meeting, which was held on June 8 at the St. Patrick’s Cafeteria. Greensboro CDA Installs Slate GREENSBORO — Mrs. Marion A. Teague was installed as grand regent at the season’s final meeting of Court Greensboro No. 1200, Catholic Daughters of America. Other new officers are Mrs. Mary Feeney, vice grand regent; Mrs. Ellen Jackson, financial secre tary; Mrs. Mabel Showfety, treas urer; Mrs. Alice Underhill, moni tor; Miss Winifred Dosier, sentinel; Mrs. Mary Teresa Furlong, lectur er; Mrs. Margaret Allen, historian; Mrs. Alice Miller, prophetess, and Mrs. Sue Schlosser, organist. Trustees are Mrs. Lucille Oyden ic, Mrs. Alice Gibson, Mrs. Helen Milo, Mrs. Naomi Cribbin, Mrs. Mary McCormick and Mrs. Lucille Wall. The officers were installed after a covered dish supper at Our Lady of Grace School auditorium. Pastors of Greensboro churches were special guests. . Mercy High School by Sacred Heart Junior College in Belmont, N.C. Miss Mosca is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Mosca, 708 Mt. Vernon Avenue. She is a member of St. Patrick’s Parish. Miss Mary Anne Olwell, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Ol well, 366 Ridgewood Ave. and a member of St. Ann’s Parish was the recipient of four scholarships. She received a four-year scholar ship from Webster College, St. Lou is, Missouri; a tuition scholarship from Chestnut Hill College, Phil adelphia, Pa., another from Geor gian Court College, Lakewood, New Jersey; and a four-year schol arship from Our Lady of the Lake College, San Antonio, Texas. Miss Olwell plans to attend Webster College in St. Louis and major in sociology. She ij« a Merit Scholar finalist and the Salutatorian of her class. A TUITION SCHOLARSHIP to Charlotte College, given by the Charlotte Charter Chapter of American Business Women’s Asso ciation, was awarded to Miss Kris ten Louise Phipps. Miss Phipps is the daughter of Mrs. Bernie J. Phipps, 2617 Yadkin Avenue and a member of Our Lady of the As sumption parish. A scholarship sponsored by Teck Products, Incorporated, of Char lotte, to Sacred Heart Junior Col lege, Belmont, N.C., was awarded to Miss Mary Anne McAleer. Miss McAleer is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles McAleer, 6600 Tuckaseegee Road, and a member of St. Patrick’s parish. Miss McAleer plans to pursue a liberal arts program at the col lege level. Miss Martha Farmer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Randolph Farmer of 2907 Park Road, was appointed to attend the Governor’s School in Winston Salem this summer. This school, sponsored by Governor Moore and personally supervised by Dr. Joseph M. Johnston of the North Carolina Department of Pub lic Instruction, is held for gifted students in North Carolina. Stu dents are selected on the basis of ability, achievement and princi pal’s recommendation. THE VALEDICTORIAN, Miss Patricia Ann Pietras, received the Bishop Waters Medal. This award is given each year to the student attaining the highest average in Religion for four years of high school. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Pietras 5,000 Wedge wood Drive, and a member of St. Ann’s parish. On Tuesday evening, at the Awards Night Program, Sister M. Concepta, Principal of Our Lady of Mercy, announced the awards for the school year 1964-1965. Honor Cords were presented to Misses Suzette DuPont, Patricia Ann Pietras, Mary Anne Olwell and Sandra Hansbrough. The. 3 cords are presented annually in recognition of outstanding schol arship, leadership and service to the school. The Civitan Award for the Out standing student was presented to Miss Mary Anne Olwell, by Dr. Robert Steagall, on behalf of the Charlotte Civitan Club. MISS KRISTEN PHIPPS re ceived the Library Award. The Office Helper Award was given to Miss Marion Harper; the Music Award to Miss Helen Kearney; Math and Home Maker Awards to Miss Mary Anne Olwell; the Vale dictory award to Miss Patricia Piet ras; Perfect attendance to Misses Virginia Tramontin, Mary McMil lan, and Jean Zimmer. Miss Sandra Hansbrough pre sented a gift to the school on be half of the Senior Class. Reverend Francis Smith, assistant pastor at St. Patrick’s Church gave the Invo cation. Mr. Robert L. Eichorn act ed as Master of Ceremonies. YUGOSLAV children in gay costumes prepare flowers for the altar to observe the feast of their local patron saint.
