Traditionalist & Pax Groups Scored
MEXICO CITY — (NC) — The
Mexico City archbishopric in a pas
toral letter has denounced two ex
tremist organizations—one on the
right and one on the left—as crea
tions of “divisive elements aimed at
creating schism within Catholi

It said that neither the “Mexican

Seen on Horizon
NEW YORK—(NC)—Hollywood
may scrap its detailed code of pro
duction standards in favor of a
brief statement stressing treat
ment rather than choice of sub
jects for motion pictures.
This is reported in Variety (Oct.
20), a weekly show business tab
loid, which said presidents of com
panies allied in the Motion Picture
Association of America are exam
ning the new code in draft form.
Major U.S. film producers now
bscribe to a 3,000-word self-reg
latory code which spells out pro
ibited subjects and methods of
ting certain episodes.
Variety said, however, the code
" often ignored and movie pro
:rs believe it fails to meet
anging standards of public ac
iptability.”
The 200-word statement being
posed as its replacement, Vari
said, is designed “not only to
iberalize the code by allowing its
dministrator to permit tasteful
andling of any and all subjects,
it to strengthen the code by per
itting the administration to ob
|ect to tasteless and offensive ren
irings of any kind, regardless of
hether they are specifically pro
ibited.”
“Brutality, illicit sex, indecent
xposure, vulgar or profane words
nd gestures, and offensive treat
lent of religion and racial or na
tional groups are noted as subjects
for restraint, but interpretation in
all areas, including the recently
debated matter of nudity, is left to
the discretion of the administra
tor,” Variety said.

THE LETTER warned Mexican

It recalled also that the so-call

Supreme Knight Hits
Public Apathy to Smut
NEW YORK — (NC) — The
moral apathy of the American pub
lic is largely responsible for pro
liferation of pornography and its
hazards to youth, John W. McDev
itt, supreme knight of the Knights
of Columbus, said here.
Popular unconcern is one of
two principal sources of protec
tion for the smut publishers and
peddlers, and the other is the le
galistic decisions of courts, he told
the fourth national convention of
the Citizens for Decent Literature.
Despite the present apathy, Mc
Devitt said he is confident the pub
lic can be persuaded to act against
pomography.
“My optimism is based on the
tremendous reservoir of good will
and good sense that the American
public has ever shown when given
the full facts on a problem,” he
said.
“One of the great concerns of
the American people long has been
the proper rearing and education
of our youth. Each year the Ameri
can public spends billions of dol
lars to provide the schools, teach
ers and technical equipment to
give our children the opportunity
for the best education ever availa
ble.
“Other billions are spent for vi
tamins, children’s formulas, pedia
tric devices, playgrounds and rec

reational facilities to give our
youngsters the opportunity for vi
brantly healthy bodies.
“The American people do not
leave aspirins lying around for
children to chew on. They have
been educated through years of
warning by every package of
drugs: ‘Keep out of the reach of
children.’ I think the American
people can be equally educated
about the toxin of salaciousness.
Then nationwide efforts will be
made to keep this moral menace
away from youth,” he said.
McDEVITT said that youth
counselors, psychologists and social
scientists are finding “a significant
relationship between salacious lit
erature and increasing crimes of
rape and sexual degeneracy.”
“Those who argue to the con
trary run into the face of common
sense,” he said. “A universally ac
cepted effort is made to provide
our youth with reading material
that is good, solidly informative,
exemplifying a good and virtu
ous life, illustrating high ideals and
providing motivation for personal
integrity, proper human relations
and community responsibility.
“Does the American public think
that this tremendous and costly ef
fort is mistaken? Wasted? Futile?
Absolutley not! Yet it is an abso
lute waste according to the logic
—or lack of logic—of those who de
fend pornographic literature. They
maintain that letting the minds of
the young wallow in filth and de
bauchery has absolutely no effect
on them. The rampant rise in
crime among the young seems to
prove them wrong.”
