Mother Mary Raphael has been closely associated with Mer cy Hospital through the years. As Mother Superior of the Belmont community in 1935, she was in strumental in the foundation of Sacred Heart College. Through her efforts and those of Mother Belmont Abbey, May 24 Dr. Cushman to Deliver Commencement Address Completing the arrangements for the 88th annual graduation ex ercises at Belmont Abbey College, the president, the Right Reverend Walter A. Coggin, O.S.B., an nonunced today that Dr. Robert E. Cushman, the Dean of the School of Religion of Duke University, will deliver the Commencement address to the graduates at the Academic Convocation on Tuesday, May 24. The president further an nounced that five honorary de Abbey Announces James Roy King As Valedictorian James Roy King, a native of Greensboro, the son of Mr. and Mrs. L. R. King of 1316 West Wendover Avenue, has been elect ed the valedictorian of his class and will deliver the address to the Honors Convocation at Belmont Abbey College, in Belmont, North Carolina, on Sunday, May 1. He has been an honor student] the four years of his college ca reer and has earned an “A” av erage. He will graduate Magna Cum Laude. He has served as president of Delta Epsilon Sigma national honor fraternity, president of his junior class, treasurer of the Student Gov ernment, and as a member of the Crusaders basketball team, the Monogram Club, and the St. John Berchmann Society. He achieved the Abbot Vincent Taylor Schol arship for the four years of col lege and was elected to “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.” He will receive the Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Account ing, at the 88th Annual Com mencement Exercises at Belmont Abbey College on Tuesday, May 24. He announced that degrees will be conferred on prominent Prot estants, Jews and Catholics. Dr. Cushman, a Methodist min ister and an accredited observer and participant in the Vatican II Council, together with Dr. Clause U. Broach, a Baptist minister and pastor of St. John’s Church in Charlotte, who also was an accred ited delegate to the Vatican Coun cil, will be recipients of honor ary degrees. Sister Angela is even today held in loving remembrance by all who were privileged to know her for her wonderful human qualities and her keen mind. Tutorial Team to Work for Six Weeks lii Elizabeth City Winooski Park, Vermont — A veteran of last year’s tutorial team at Elizabeth City, N.C., will cap tain the volunteers from St. Mi chael’s College who will work with promising Negro pupils there again this summer. Gary B. Kulik, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Kulik, 29 Bartels St., Springfield, Mass., has been desig nated as the captain of the six man team that is volunteering six weeks this summer. A dean’s list student, he will be a senior in American Studies this fall. The announcement came from the Rev. Moses B. Anderson, S.S.E. Father Anderson, a member of the Theology faculty at St. Mi chael’s, is a former pastor at St. Catherine’s Parish in Elizabeth City. He told his St. Michael’s stu dents about the number of stu dents in that area who have little chance to gain admission or scho larships for higher education. Last summer, at the invitation of the Elizabeth City Improvement Association, six students went with Ft. Anderson to the North Carolina City. Living in the rectory and using .the parish school, they tutored some 60 boys and girls from the four counties around Elizabeth City. They specialized in English and Mathematics. Fr. Anderson said that the pupils were nomi nated by the guidance officers at the schools and that he has re ceived many favorable reports on the value of the tutorial sessions. He spent the Easter vacation dis cussing plans for the second year with officials at Elizabeth City. Raphael Doyle Cardinal Gibbons High Schedules Spring Concert The Glee Club of Cardinal Gib bons High of Raleigh will present its annual Spring Concert on Fri day, May 6 at 8 P.M. The concert includes a wide variety of songs from traditional hymns to modern melodies and folk songs. Included in the pro gram are: Deep River, The Lord’s Prayer, Anthem for Spring, and Franz Schubert’s Du Bist Die Ruh. Several special numbers will be presented, including two folk songs by the Grace Notes and stage numbers by girls and boys groups. The program will be held in the Father Price Gymnasium at 3301 Western Boulevard. Tickets are $1.00 per person and $1.50 per family.
