Accord ing to the Roman Catholic view, reunion of the Churches must be on papal terms. “We rejoice in the wider use of the Scriptures among Roman Catholics. We shall pray that all those who study the Scriptures will be led by the Holy Spirit to the saving faith in Christ. “We shall urge Evangelicals to seize today’s unique opportunities for witness among Roman Catho lics. “We recognize the danger of looking upon the Roman Catholic Church as ‘our great sister Church,’ even as we reaffirm the abiding validity of the Scriptural princi ples of the Reformers, that salva tion is through faith alone, and that the Bible is the only rule of faith and practice.” National leaders of the Younger Christian churches in countries abroad—including the Rev. Hallinan of Atlanta said here Catholics active in the Scout ing movement were in the thick of ecumenism before it became the fashion. “The Catholic Scouters, along with the Newman chaplains and the armed service chaplains, have been practical card-carrying ecu menists long before it was re spectable,” Archbishop Hallinan said. He addressed the closing ban quet of the 19th national confer ence of diocesan Scout chaplains and lay chairmen of Scouting. “We are all grateful,” he said, “for the manner in which Catho lic Scouting has cooperated with the Boy Scouts of America, and all the more grateful for the hand of friendship and mutual sharing extended by the national body. We are united not because of weak ness but because of strength.” Describing the goals of Scout ing, the archbishop said “we are not fighting the world in which we live.” Rather, he said, “we are fight ing our own complacency, our own ignorance, our own resistance to change. It is to ready our young men to fight this creeping apathy that you invite them to become Scouts, meet with them, instruct and train them, motivate them, and share with them nature’s ri gors as well as nature’s joys.” Archbishop Hallinan received a special Ad Altare Dei Award of the Catholic Scouting movement at the banquet. During the conference, pro posed changes in the require ments for boys to receive the Ad Altare Dei Award were discussed. A. A. Kirk, executive secretary of the Catholic Committee on Scouting and director of the Cath olic relations service of the Boy Scouts of America, said the pro posed new requirements are “built around the new liturgy, the Scrip tures, and social change in Amer ica and in the Church.” They will stress service by Scouts to Church and community, he said. It was announced that William H. Condon will succeed Kirk as director of the Catholic relations service of the Boy Scouts of Amer ica and as executive secretary of the Catholic Committee on Scout ing. Condon has been coordinator of special services in the rela tionships division of the Boys Scouts at their headquarters in New Brunswick, N.J., since 1963. Kirk is retiring in June after serving 40 years with the Scouting movement in a professional ca pacity. He was honored at a ban quet during the conference here.
